Job description
Alabama State University, College of Visual and Performing Arts seeks to fill the Director of University Bands faculty position with an appointment as an Assistant/Associate/Full Professor of Music (tenure-track) for the Department of Music. The successful candidate will be responsible for leading a comprehensive band program including the direction of the University wind ensemble during both the fall and spring semesters, the direction of the nationally recognized Mighty Marching Hornets during the fall semester, and the direction of a basketball Pep Band during the spring semester. A major responsibility of the Director of University Bands is recruitment for the marching band including selection of scholarship awardees.
Faculty in the Department of Music teach a full course load each semester, and fulfill additional instructional duties which may include teaching undergraduate and graduate music education courses, conducting courses, or teaching applied lessons depending on the secondary qualifications of the candidate and the needs of the Department. As determined by the department chair, the selected candidate for this position will have a schedule that is amenable to fulfill all job responsibilities.
The Director of University Bands reports to the Chair of the Department of Music. As a tenure-track, full[1]time faculty member in the Department, the successful candidate will be expected to cultivate an active research and creativity activity portfolio, including service in the areas of recruiting, community outreach, and academic citizenship that aligns with the expectations for a tenure-track teaching position. This position requires an extensive time commitment and willingness to collaborate on a variety of projects and performances.
Minimum Qualifications
A Master of Music in Conducting or Music Education required. DMA or PhD in Conducting or Music Education preferred (ABD also considered with stipulations for degree completion), and a minimum of 5 years of successful teaching experience at the K-12 or collegiate level or a combination thereof.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required for this Position:
- Collaborates well with others and works within the Department of Music, and the College of Visual & Performing Arts, to support music program goals, objectives, and student learning outcomes.
- Demonstrates strong organizational skills, a high level of competency, attention to detail, awareness of higher education policy, and professionalism.
- Demonstrates strong oral and written communication skills and communicates information clearly to supervisors and administration.
- Possesses strong computer skills and a familiarity with learning management systems, Microsoft 365, and the operation of various social media platforms.
- Demonstrates strong emotional intelligence, and a sensitivity to diverse learners and students from culturally diverse backgrounds. Demonstrates an educational philosophy that is in alignment with the Department of Music, and the College of Visual & Performing Arts, including student development by means of student[1]centered instruction. Serves as a mentor and professional role model for students.
- Demonstrates a high priority on academics and displays sensitivity to the time demands placed on students participating in ensembles. Displays respect for student efforts, and for students’ emotional and physical well-being. Demonstrates the ability to plan and lead efficient and effective rehearsals that conform to the published rehearsal times for ensemble courses.
- Demonstrates strong interpersonal skills and collegiality for fostering positive working relationships with faculty and staff, while collaborating and contributing to advancing the goals, objectives, and learning outcomes of the music program.
- Demonstrates high ethical standards and accountability for the management of university resources and equipment. Demonstrates familiarity with the state procurement and requisition system, and with travel and liability protocols.
- Demonstrates the ability to educate students on what constitutes hazing, and to educate students on the University’s zero-tolerance policy for hazing (including any band activities that exclude certain student populations).
- Demonstrates the ability to develop relationships with area high school band directors to recruit students for the music program, and the ability to contribute to music education community outreach initiatives sponsored by the Department of Music. Demonstrates the ability to work collegially with admissions staff, and with representatives from athletics, student life, and with various other external booster clubs, program supporters, and alumni.
