The Department of Archaeology at Bilkent University invites applications for one open-rank, full-time faculty position. This position is part of our broader initiative to build capacity for interdisciplinary research and teaching within one of Türkiye’s leading archaeology departments. We are seeking researchers with a dynamic, interdisciplinary background and strong research ties to Türkiye and surrounding regions. Although research area is open, we especially welcome applications from scholars specializing in one or more of the following fields: (a) Classical Archaeology, (b) Archaeological Science, (c) Public Archaeology.
Minimum requirements are a PhD in Archaeology at the time of the appointment, a clearly defined research agenda, and publications in internationally noted journals or presses. Candidates should be able to teach specialized topics in their research field at the graduate level, as well as general courses in Archaeology at the undergraduate level.
The Department of Archaeology is an expanding institution that currently offers an undergraduate program and a Master’s program; a PhD program is planned for the near future. The Department’s programs focus on the Neolithic, Bronze and Iron Ages as well as the Greek, Roman and Medieval archaeology of Türkiye and surrounding regions. Our team of specialists, who are all active researchers, help students explore the material remains of the many peoples that have populated and passed through this dynamic geography. Research-led teaching incorporating digital humanities, public archaeology, and material and art-historical studies provides a stimulating insight into how we continue to learn about and interpret the past.
Our various research specialisms constitute a dynamic interdisciplinary approach, drawing on such fields as art and architectural history, cultural and physical anthropology, history, geology, chemistry, and other natural sciences. We place importance on hands-on experience for students both in our departmental laboratory and on site through an internship program at sites across Türkiye. The Department is directly affiliated with a number of outstanding archeological sites in Türkiye, including Aphrodisias, Sagalassos and Türkmen-Karahöyük. Our comprehensive approach to archaeology and its complementary disciplines in the humanities, social and natural sciences ensures that our graduates are well prepared for the world of modern archaeological practice.
