Job Title: Associate Director of Campus Ministry for Liturgy, Faith Formation, and Vincentian Initiatives

Reports to: Director of Campus Ministry for Liturgy, Faith Formation, and Mission Communication

Campus: Queens

Job Summary:

  • Coordinate and execute the Order of Christian Initiation of Adults (OCIA) program on campus for students and employees.
  • Moderate the St. Vincent de Paul Society
  • Collaborate with the members of the Liturgy and Faith Formation area, including the Graduate Assistant for Fath Formation, in running other faith formation programs
  • Provide support to Daily Mass and the Sunday Night Mass student community weekly on behalf of the Area of Liturgy and Faith Formation especially in regard to ongoing training and development of student liturgical ministers
  • Support the work of the area of Liturgy and Faith Formation at other regular and special liturgical functions and as a member of the Liturgy Committee
  • Directly supervise the following positions: Campus Minister for Music Ministry & Faith Formation and Part-Time Sunday Music Minister

Essential Functions:

Faith Formation

  • Coordinate and execute the Order of Christian Initiation of Adults (OCIA) program on campus for students and employees.
  • Recruit and provide formation for students preparing to join the Catholic Church or complete their initiation sacraments into the Church.
  • Manage weekly presentations to the Queens student cohort from mid-late September through the Third Week of Easter when classes are in session.
  • Schedule sessions with employees, with frequency and duration to be determined.
  • Provide one-on-one support to catechumens and candidates.
  • Execute a retreat for catechumens and candidates during the Purification and Enlightenment period.
  • Plan and organize the Rite of Acceptance and Rite of Election leading up to the Reception of the Sacraments Mass in the Easter season.
  • Work with the local bishop and his office to execute the reception of the sacraments.
  • Collect and process all paperwork in accordance with Church law in collaboration with St. Nicholas of Tolentine parish.
  • Collaborate with the members of Liturgy and Faith Formation area in running other faith formation programs
  • Including but not limited to special programs for Advent, Lent, and other large-scale initiatives
  • Work with the Graduate Assistant for Faith Formation in executing regular (weekly, monthly) programming efforts
  • Assess and explore for the need for additional faith formation groups/initiatives on campus and collaborate in executing these initiatives and programs.

Liturgy

  • Provide support to the Sunday Night Mass student community on behalf of the Area of Liturgy and Faith Formation
  • Be present for all Sunday Night Masses
  • Ensure all student and logistical operations are prepared and functioning, including but not limited to checking-in and briefing all liturgical ministers, music ministry, sacristans; as well as communicating any special arrangements to the priest celebrant before Mass.
  • Serve as a representative from Liturgy and Faith Formation to provide regular feedback on the needs, trends, and experiences of that community to be explored by the Liturgy Committee.
  • Liturgical Support
  • Serve as a member of the Liturgy Committee
  • Assist at liturgical celebrations and at special Masses with tasks such as but not limited to, checking in participants and priests, coordinating ushers, ensuring participant preparedness day-of.
  • Be able to train student liturgical ministers.
  • Be present at select liturgies outside of work hours when needed and if available.

Vincentian Mission Initiatives

  • Moderate St. Vincent de Paul Society
  • Work with Student Government Inc. and Student Activities (Division of Student Success) to lead this student run faith-based service organization.
  • Monitor a full calendar of service during the academic year.
  • Train and support the executive board including but not limited to regular meetings with the executive board members.
  • Make arrangements and provide support and preparation for student leaders representing St. John’s University at local and national conferences.
  • Ensure collaboration and compliance with SVDP Rule, Manual, and By-Laws.
  • Maintain external collaboration with SVDPLI, including but not limited to overseeing student participation in external events and opportunities.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Directly supervise the following positions for performance management: Campus Minister for Music Ministry & Faith Formation and Part-Time Sunday Music Minister

Competencies

  • Understanding of Roman Catholic dogma and doctrine as taught by the Magisterium
  • Ability to offer and direct catechesis to adults or young adults in a higher education setting

Work Environment

This job operates in a professional office environment and in a Church building.

This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as personal computers, printers, and liturgical items.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand; move about; sit; to carry work and use controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; communicate.; The employee must occasionally lift or move up to 10 lbs. Specific vision abilities required by the employee include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

This is a full-time position. Days and hours of work are Monday through Thursday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; Friday 8:30 a.m.- 12p.m.; Sunday 5:00 p.m. – 8:00p.m. This position can require longer-than-normal-work-day-hours, as well as, weekend work.

Travel

Travel is primarily local and may include visits to regional Vincentian-affiliated sites.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Theology or other related field.
  • 5+ years’ experience in campus ministry, pastoral ministry, or Catholic young adult education
  • Some supervision experiences

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Master’s in Theology
  • 2 years of Supervision Experience
