Position Summary
Indiana University Bloomington (IUB) invites applications for a tenured/tenure-track faculty position in the Luddy School of Informatics, Computing, and Engineering in the field of artificial intelligence for life sciences. This search seeks applicants at the assistant or associate professor rank to serve as a member of the Computer Science or Intelligent Systems Engineering Department. We seek candidates who can teach and lead cutting-edge research in AI, including generative AI, to bridge biomolecular data-such as genomics and pharmaceutical mechanisms-with clinical insights into disease and targeted interventions across areas such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease. We encourage applications from scholars who apply interdisciplinary perspectives across a variety of domains and complement existing strengths within these departments in bioinformatics, artificial intelligence and machine learning, and expand cutting-edge initiatives including the recently launched B.S. in Robotics and IUB’s targeted growth in bioengineering and pre-med pathways within Intelligent Systems Engineering, directly translating theoretical AI into physical, real-world solutions. This 10-month appointment would ideally start August 1, 2027, although an earlier or later start date is negotiable. Responsibilities: Tenured/tenure-track faculty at Indiana University Bloomington are expected to substantially contribute to the overall academic excellence of their department by developing and/or maintaining a robust research portfolio including pursuing and obtaining major extramural research funding to conduct cutting-edge research both as a corresponding principal investigator and a collaborating investigator; teaching and mentoring undergraduate and/or graduate students as designated by the department chairperson; and actively providing service within the department, school and university alongside active engagement with the profession and/or the community.
Areas of particular interest include, but are not limited to:

  • AI for Genomics and Systems Biology
  • AI for Clinical Diagnosis and Personalized Medicine
  • AI for Structural Biology and Drug Discovery
  • Agentic AI for Life Sciences Research and Discovery
  • Lab Automation and Bio-Instrumentation

This position is located on the campus of Indiana University, Bloomington (IUB) in Bloomington, Indiana, and the successful candidate is expected to work on the IUB campus to allow full engagement with the department, school, campus, and community. Indiana University bases its tenure and promotion recommendations upon performance in three areas including research, teaching, and service. All individuals hired through this initiative are expected to excel in research and demonstrate strong performance in teaching and service.

Minimum Qualifications: Applicants should possess a PhD in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field and be committed to excellence in scholarship and teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Candidates seeking positions with tenure must demonstrate a record of scholarly achievement appropriate for a tenured appointment, including extramurally funded research as a corresponding principal investigator, current funding or strong potential to secure external funding, an established record of publications and scholarly work, and experience leading sizeable research initiatives. Candidates with industry backgrounds, particularly at the intersection of AI and the life sciences, are highly encouraged to apply.
