The Resident Dean, as a live-in professional, is responsible for the overall supervision of a designated residential area and its RA staff. They work to create an inclusive residential environment that fosters student development, academic achievement, and the development of a safe, healthy, and respectful community. The Assistant Director recruits, trains and supervises a seasonal staff responsible for the residential component of the Summer High School Program. The Resident Dean is also responsible for ensuring that the department is supporting the mission of the College and Student Affairs and fully complies with the policies, rules, and regulations of the College and any relevant affiliations.
Specific Resident Dean Responsibilities:
Residential Community Development & Student Support
- Create an inclusive educational living and learning environment consistent with the mission and philosophy of the department, the division, and the college.
- Facilitate social and educational programming in the residence halls and campus-wide; supervise Resident Assistants in program development, marketing, and implementation.
- Facilitate intentional conversations and interactions with students around individual development and the challenges inherent in community living.
- Communicate information pertinent to the personal and academic development of students.
- Investigate, assess, and determine appropriate methods of intervention and resolution of various interpersonal and community problems in residence halls.
- Consult & collaborate with members of the division and College including counselors, coaches, health services staff and academic advisors to address student and programmatic needs.
- Participate in academic and behavior intervention systems when appropriate or requested.
- Maintain an active and updated working knowledge of residential life/student development theory, and learning differences through literature review and professional associations.
Supervision, Staffing, and Training
- Provide direct supervision to Resident Assistants assigned to your residential area, and indirect supervision of all RA staff while on-duty/on-call.
- Maintain regular office hours and provide supervision of the Residence Halls and student staff.
- Participate in the recruitment, hiring, training and evaluation of the Resident Assistant Staff. Assist in planning, administering, and evaluating various functions, programs, and services in the residential life area (e.g., in-services, training, hiring, and themed programming).
- Operations, Administration, and Facilities Management
- Manage operational and administrative responsibilities that include hall preparation, closing processes, key management, maintenance requests, and reporting associated with processes.
- Assist in the coordination of housing administrative responsibilities including move-in, health and safety inspections, relocation, move-out, and maintaining accurate assignment records.
- Work in conjunction with the Facilities Department and Department of Campus Security on maintenance and safety requirements relevant to the residence hall physical plant systems, security matters, health and safety inspections, and fire drills.
- Maintain thorough communication and documentation via timely student follow-up in Maxient.
Crisis Management, Conduct, and Campus Engagement
- Participate in an on-call and duty rotation that includes primary on-call/duty assignments; respond to crises in accordance with campus policies and response guidelines.
- Acts as liaison with Campus Safety, Health Services and Counseling, faculty, and other offices during a crisis or emergencies and supports urgent student follow up.
- Serve on conduct boards and department, division, and college-wide committees as needed.
- Participate as directed in the College’s crisis-related planning and response efforts.
- Assist in the enforcement of college policies on campus.
- Assist in the planning, coordination, and implementation of programs and events in collaboration with o other campus departments and divisions.
- Attend and participate in regular staff and division meetings. Perform other duties as assigned or directed.
- Specific High School Program Assistant Director Responsibilities:
- Staff Management & Supervision
- Recruit, interview, train, supervise and evaluate a seasonal residential life team for the HSP.
- Coordinate the on-call and duty rotation for the seasonal staff team, respond to crisis in accordance with campus policies and response guidelines.
- Coordinate staff housing responsibilities including move-in, health and safety inspections, relocation, move-out and maintaining accurate assignment records.
- Plan, implement, and evaluate various functions, programs, and services in the summer residential life program area (i.e., schedule development, training, supervision and follow-up).
Student Support & Community Engagement
- Create an inclusive educational living and learning environment consistent with the mission and philosophy of the high school and the college.
- Coordinate programming support and educational expectations in the evening and weekends.
- Facilitate thorough communication and documentation via timely student follow-up in Maxient.
- Assess and determine appropriate methods of intervention and resolution of various interpersonal and community problems in residence halls; facilitate intentional conversations.
- Communicate information pertinent to the personal and academic development of students. Participate in crisis-related response efforts for the program including missing student protocol. Assist in the enforcement of college policies on campus.
- Operations & Administrative Coordination
- Manage operational and administrative responsibilities that include hali preparation, closing processes, key management, maintenance requests and reporting associated with processes.
- Acts as liaison with Administration, Nursing, Counseling, and other offices during the program.
- Attend and participate in regular associated meetings. Perform other duties as assigned or directed.
Required Qualifications & Skills:
Educational Qualifications: Bachelor’s Degree (four-year college or university) required; Master’s Degree preferred (in Student Personnel, Counseling, Higher Education, or related area.
Preferable Skills: Prior residence hall experience; excellent interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills; understanding student development theory, working with neurodivergent students; ability to handle sensitive and confidential information; self-starter with the ability to manage multiple priorities; possess a valid driver’s license and pass the required College testing and ability to work flexible and non-traditional hours.
This is a 12-month live-in position which includes an apartment and 10 meals per week in the dining hall during fall, spring and summer terms (43 weeks per year) to facilitate community connection and incidental interaction.
Physical Demands:
The work is mostly in an office environment. Typically, the employee may sit comfortably to do the work. However, there may be some walking, standing, bending, and occasional need to lift, carry, and/or drag approximately 25 pounds. Some repetitive motions are performed in typing and word processing. On occasion, this position may have extended periods in heat/frigid temperatures.
