The Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine in the School of Medicine at the University of Alabama at Birmingham is seeking fellowship trained cardiac anesthesiologists to join our growing clinical practice. Cardiovascular Medicine and Surgery has a long and esteemed history at UAB. In this context, The Division of Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology has an unwavering commitment to the education of anesthesiology residents and cardiothoracic anesthesiology fellows. The ACGMEaccredited fellowship currently enrolls three fellows per year. The clinical practice employs a care team model which is supported by a committed group of nurse anesthetists dedicated to the care of patients with cardiovascular disease. At University Hospital in 2018 there were 1400 adult cardiac cases and 800 thoracic cases performed. Additionally, the cardiac anesthesiologists provide anesthesia and TEE services for a large and growing structural heart program, as well as electrophysiology and vascular procedures. Case numbers are expected to increase due to the addition of multiple new cardiac surgeons and cardiologists. Anesthesiology faculty perform and interpret the TEEs for all open cardiac surgical procedures and limited TEE coverage for the structural heart procedures. The Department is fully committed to basic and clinical research, and the current clinical growth will provide an awesome opportunity for research and investigation. The relationship with cardiac surgeons and cardiologists is very collegial, and the weekly multidisciplinary TAVR conference reflects this strong sense of collaboration. Attending anesthesiologists are responsible for the medical direction of the full spectrum of cardiac and thoracic procedures. Detailed information on the academic and clinical activities of the department are found at http://medicine.uab.edu/anesthesiology.
