Assistant Professor of Practice 
Film and Media Arts

The School of Film and Media Arts at Cleveland State University is seeking applications for a full time Assistant Professor of Practice position to begin on August 20, 2018. The Assistant Professor of Practice will teach four courses per semester and engage in service duties as assigned. The position is annually renewable for an additional five years based on satisfactory performance and university financial resources. After a comprehensive sixth year review, the appointee will be eligible for two successive three-year appointments and six-year appointments thereafter.

Minimum qualifications are a Master’s Degree in Film or a related field and ten years of on set professional experience preferably in producing, directing, and/or cinematography. For candidates with a preferred MFA in Film or a related field, five years of similar professional production experience is a minimum requirement.

Additional preferred qualifications include a strong background in narrative filmmaking with experience in several aspects of film production. Prior teaching experience and evidence of effective teaching is strongly preferred. The ideal candidate should be able to teach a broad variety of film and television courses including beginning and advanced directing, as well as beginning, intermediate and advanced preproduction and production. Professional experience and ability to teach screenwriting or other specialty areas within the discipline is also preferred as is the ability to contribute through teaching and/or service to the diversity, cultural sensitivity, and excellence of the academic community.

The School of Film and Media Arts was founded in 2016 within the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences with a significant grant from the State of Ohio. It is a rapidly expanding undergraduate major with over 250 students in the program and will begin offering a BFA degree in a range of specialties as it moves into a brand new state of the art production teaching facility in Fall 2018. The new facility will be housed in the Idea Center, also home to Cleveland’s PBS television station WVIZ in an historic building in Playhouse Square, the second largest theater district in the U.S.
