Job description

Purpose and Main Duties

The Department of Criminology is looking for one part-time fixed-term Associate Lecturer to teach the following module in 2017-18, as part of our postgraduate taught master’s programmes, including the MA/LLM Criminal Law and Criminal Justice and the MSc Global Criminology:

  • Youth Justice (Spring Term, 10 Wednesdays 7:30-9pm) Total hours include 15 hours teaching time, In addition to contact hours for teaching, up to 15 hours may be paid for module guide preparation, paid at the ‘plain rate’ / non-teaching rate of £23.02

The Spring Term runs January to March 2018 with final marking in April.

Your main responsibility will be the preparation, teaching, administration and assessment of the module. You will deliver teaching to Birkbeck students, in order to enable them to complete their studies successfully and you will undertake all related course administrative and assessment duties as required.

Candidate Requirements
Candidates will be expected to have demonstrated teaching and/or research experience in the area of Criminology or a closely related field.

In addition to the job requirements outlined on the attached role profile the minimum requirements for selection are as follows:

  • A Master’s degree in Criminology, Social Science or in the Humanities or an equivalent qualification.
  • A knowledge of, and commitment to, critical approaches to criminology and criminal justice.
  • Relevant teaching experience, ideally working with adult students within the HE/FE sector.
  • Demonstrably effective communication, interpersonal and presentation skills across a range of relevant contexts.
  • A working knowledge of I.T. including word, excel, email and experience of/or willingness to use Moodle, Birkbeck’s virtual learning environment.
  • Experience of/or willingness to develop and work with a wide range of teaching and assessment methods for a diverse student body.
  • Ability to work effectively both as part of a team and independently as appropriate.
  • Willing to engage in reflective practice.

Please note: Candidates will need to demonstrate competence or significant potential in all areas.

In addition it is desirable that candidates have:

  • Significant experience of teaching adults from a wide range of backgrounds on open access courses particularly in HE.
  • A Teaching Qualification.
  • A good understanding of the needs of part-time adult learners and be able to relate well to their individual needs and engage their interest and enthusiasm.
  • A PhD or equivalent experience.

Salary: Grade 7 of the College’s London Pay Scale which is starting rate £57.55 per hour (inclusive of holiday pay) for contact hours worked.

The salary quoted above is based on an hourly rate dependent upon length of service with the College. This hourly rate is based on the starting point of Grade 7 and is inclusive of a ‘Duties Related to Teaching Multiplier’ which covers preparation; teaching, administration, assessment marking and other examining duties in connection with the course. The College’s London Pay Scale includes a consolidated Weighting/Allowance which applies only to staff whose normal contractual place of work is in the Greater London area. This appointment is subject to a probationary period of 18 months.
