Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (FAMU) is seeking applications for the position of Chair of the Department of Elementary Education in the College of Education (COE).
The COE can be considered the cornerstone college of FAMU, a thriving historically Black university located in Florida’s capital city, Tallahassee. The COE was the only college within the university at its inception in 1887. The primary mission of the college is to prepare teacher and leadership candidates to become transformative school leaders. The COE administers pre- and in-service professional education and graduate programs encompassed within four departments: Elementary Education; Secondary Education, Technology Education, and Foundations; Health, Physical Education, and Recreation; and Educational Leadership and Counseling.
Position Description: This position reports to the Dean.
The Chair performs administrative functions for the department which includes developing faculty Assignment of Responsibility (AOR), scheduling of classes, conducting faculty/staff annual evaluations and performance reviews, providing staffing as appropriate, including employment recommendations for adjunct and part-time faculty and facilitating student registration and advisement. Additionally, the Department Chair is responsible for program planning, development, and evaluation; development of Annual Reports, program data, and budget and financial management of the department.
Minimum Qualifications: The accepted applicant will be hired at the rank of full professor. Candidates must meet all tenure and promotion criteria for the rank of full professor: The successful candidate for this position will have an earned doctorate from an accredited institution in Early Childhood Education, Elementary Education, Reading, or a closely related field. The candidate must have at least ten (10) years of successful full-time college level teaching experience, as well as at least three (3) years of P-12 public school teaching experience in Early Childhood Education, Elementary Education, Reading, or a closely related field. Further, the successful candidate must provide evidence of strong leadership skills, innovative thinking, and progressive use of technology. The candidate must have a record of recent scholarship, service, and grant writing activities, as well as a record of progressive recruitment and retention strategies that were proven successful. Additionally, the successful candidate must have mastery of databased decision-making strategies, and experience with program approval and/or accreditation.
Preferred Qualifications: Preference will be given to candidates with knowledge of state and national accreditation standards; experience teaching online or in blended/hybrid formats using an array of learning technologies and platforms; and prior experience as a department chair or a comparable leadership position in a higher education setting.
Salary: Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience.
