The University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) seeks applications and nominations of highly qualified individuals for the position of Assistant Vice Chancellor/Dean of Students (AVC/DOS) in the Division of Student Life. This position reports directly to the Vice Chancellor for Student Life, and will serve as the University’s chief student advocate, providing visionary and strategic leadership and expertise to a range of student services including students with disabilities, student mental health and well-being, power-based violence education and advocacy, non-clinical case management and intervention, and student conduct.The AVC/DOS serves as an integral member of the division’s leadership team and supports Student Life by leading an advocacy and support network that fosters a culture of care and ensures students experiencing personal hardships or health concerns receive compassion and consideration. The AVC/DOS oversees use of student hardship funds, behavioral intervention, threat assessment, bystander intervention, student crisis management and response, disability accommodations, and management of free speech and First Amendment rights for the Division of Student Life. In collaboration with the Vice Chancellor for Student Life, the AVC/DOS leads initiatives and directives to ensure compliance with all relevant university, local, state and federal policies/guidelines/regulations affecting Student Life operations such as the Student Code of Conduct, FERPA, Clery, ADA/504 and Title IX.The AVC/DOS facilitates an optimally respectful, diverse and inclusive campus culture that promotes student well-being and success. The ideal candidate will direct and participate in efforts to assist faculty, staff, students and families who are seeking information, guidance and support about a range of student-related academic, health, behavioral, and personal issues. The position serves as the primary liaison with General Counsel, Institutional Equity and Compliance, University Police, and the Faculty Senate as it relates to Student Life. The AVC/DOS will work collaboratively with Academic Affairs, college administrators, and faculty to help achieve the university’s objectives for retention. The position will develop formal and informal relationships with community agencies and partners in pursuit of appropriate and reliable sources of services for students.The AVC/DOS will oversee a combined budget exceeding $4 million and assist in the development of area annual budgets, monitor spending throughout the year, and approve transfers of funds as needed from various discretionary accounts. The AVC/DOS is responsible for more than 40 full-time staff. The position will also supervise and evaluate the work of direct reports, supervise employee hiring and training, and represent the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Student Life on committees and task forces, as needed.

A master’s degree in educational leadership, higher education, counseling, social work, student affairs administration, or a closely related field and a minimum of eight (8) years of progressively responsible experience in education, non-profit sector, public service, or a closely related field is required. Experience supervising, training, and evaluating staff; a demonstrated ability to effectively build and manage diverse teams; and the proven ability to provide guidance, budget development, and budgetary oversight to multiple departments are required. The successful candidate will have experience with strategic planning and program assessment; a demonstrated commitment to student-centered decision making, service, and inclusive excellence; and demonstrated knowledge and/or experience in the areas of student conduct, student advocacy, bystander education and intervention, student mental health, and disability accommodation. The AVC/DOS must have successful experience building collaborative partnerships and excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Preference will be given to candidates with a doctorate or terminal degree; a working knowledge of legal and compliance issues related to student affairs; and experience with student crisis support, including organizing response teams and effective emergency action planning.
