Job Description:
Coppin State University, a fully accredited institution and a member of the University System of Maryland, is accepting applications for an Associate Professor of Mathematics who will also lead the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science as chair. The department is within the College of Arts & Sciences and Education. The faculty finalist, serving as the chair for the department, and must demonstrate strong leadership skills and have knowledge of areas housed within the department, specifically mathematics, computer science, or cybersecurity engineering. The top candidate must possess the knowledge, skills, and disposition necessary to serve in a leadership role and be willing to be appointed to a chair’s position. The preferred candidate must present research, teaching, and service documentation that will result in hire at the rank of Associate Professor with tenure. The preferred candidate must bring a leadership background that demonstrates experience in providing support to students and a strong interaction with colleagues in support of the academic unit with the intent and ability to grow programs and increase enrollment.

Founded in 1900, Coppin is an urban residential Historically Black College and University (HBCU), serving nearly 2,500 students enrolled in day, evening, weekend, and online courses.

Responsibilities:

Support the growth and development of the department (students, faculty, staff, and programs), including program growth, accreditation, program review and approval processes, strategic planning, building external partnerships, supporting retention activities, advising, etc.;

Deliver instruction up to 6 credits in mathematics;

Enhance research experience with the goal of further developing an active research and publication agenda within the department;

Provide service on Departmental, College, and University-Wide Committees;

Perform other tasks necessary to support the activities within the department.

Minimum Qualifications:

A terminal degree in Mathematics from an accredited university and at least three years of experience in higher education leadership.

Preferred Qualifications:

Also, must have experience in teaching courses in mathematics with research related backgroup in one or more of identified areas; at least three years of experience in higher education leadership;

experience in teaching courses in mathematics with research related background in one or more of the identified areas and an established record of leadership and supervisory experience

  • Knowledge and skills in program planning, project management, and academic administration;
  • Evidence of successful collaboration, interdisciplinary work, and ability to handle sensitive situations and information with discretion; and
  • Ability to work effectively with internal and external constituents.
