Houghton University, a nationally-ranked Christ-centered university of the liberal arts and sciences, invites applications for the position of dean of the School of Education & Behavioral Science. The successful applicant will hold the inaugural appointment for the Ellen F. Donley Dean of Education & Behavioral Science, supported by a newly established endowment.

Founded in 1883, Houghton University is a Christian liberal arts college in the Wesleyan tradition with a student body representing 40 states and Canadian provinces and 25 foreign countries. US News & World Report’s “America’s Best Colleges” Guide has ranked Houghton among the Tier 1 National Liberal Arts institutions. The School of Education & Behavioral Science is one of the largest on campus and includes undergraduate programs in education, psychology, and criminal justice, and graduate programs in education. Houghton’s education programs are accredited by AAQEP and hold candidate status with the ACSI Higher Education Accreditation Program.

The university is seeking a dynamic and experienced individual with a passion for teacher preparation and a vision for leading Houghton’s well-established education and behavioral science programs to greater regional and national prominence. The successful candidate will enthusiastically embrace the university’s mission to offer an academically challenging Christ-centered education in the liberal arts and sciences to students from diverse traditions and economic backgrounds, equipping them to lead and labor as scholar-servants in a changing world.

The individual selected for this opportunity will serve as one of five academic deans at Houghton University and report directly to the provost. The position will include some teaching . Specific assignment to be determined by candidate qualifications and expertise, with special consideration given to candidates with credentials and classroom experience in special education.

The successful candidate will possess a terminal degree in an education-related field and a record of accomplishment commensurate with the expectations of appointment at the rank of Associate or Full Professor. Additional expectations include strong interpersonal and leadership skills, and evidence of a mature Christian faith with an interest in integration of faith and learning.

The preferred candidate will have proven leadership experience; the ability to develop supportive relationships with students, faculty, and staff; strong communication skills; familiarity with state teacher education requirements and accreditation; the ability to communicate effectively with constituent K-12 schools; a commitment to excellence in the classroom and professional practice; expertise to guide organizational development and to creatively address issues at the forefront of teacher education, psychology, and criminal justice; and an enthusiastic leadership style that inspires students, faculty, staff, and off-campus partners.
