Utah State University’s School of Teacher Education and Leadership (TEAL) invites applications for a tenure-track position as Assistant Professor in Adolescent/Secondary English Language Arts Education beginning August 2023. Using an extensive knowledge base in theoretical and practice-oriented research, TEAL nurtures a vision of effective, equitable educational experiences for all students and seeks to provide leadership in Secondary English Language Arts Education. Such leadership includes excellent teaching and practical, empirical research. TEAL seeks applicants who share this vision and welcome the opportunity to join a strong program to make contributions at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
The emphasis of this position is research. The ideal candidate will be a talented researcher and an expert teacher capable of using a variety of delivery modalities (face-to-face, hybrid, online, and web broadcast). Opportunities exist for faculty members in Literacy Education to collaborate on research projects in literacy education with colleagues across the university’s Statewide Campus system. The new Assistant Professor will join a vital group of more than 35 TEAL faculty representing diverse areas of education- 28 located on the Logan campus and 7 on Statewide campuses.
The position is located on USU’s main campus in Logan, Utah, a Carnegie-recognized R1 Institution of Higher Education. This position is not eligible for remote work. This position is a tenure-track, nine-month, academic-year appointment with the opportunity for summer employment.

- Engage in academic scholarship, including grant writing and conducting/publishing research in adolescent/secondary literacy education;
- Teach undergraduate courses in TEAL’s Secondary Teaching Education Program (STEP) using face-to-face, broadcast, and online delivery methods; teach graduate courses as assigned.
- Chair and serve on graduate student committees;
- Develop partnerships with schools to facilitate research and provide secondary literacy education programs.
- Teach and work with students from diverse populations;
- Service to the department and institution, as well as provide national, state, and local service to the profession.
- Earned EdD or PhD by August 2023, with expertise in adolescent literacy or secondary English Language Arts education.
- At least three years of demonstrated successful experience teaching English Language Arts at the middle school and/or high school levels.
- An emerging record of refereed journal publications in secondary literacy that aligns with the assistant professor level.
- Demonstrated potential for teaching secondary English Language Arts Education courses (with pedagogical-content knowledge in disciplinary literacy) at the university level.
- A commitment to advancing equity, diversity, and inclusion in research, teaching, and mentoring.
- Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
- Evidence of ability to establish a program of research that includes practicing professionals in field-based settings.
- Experience working on and/or obtaining extramural research funding through grant writing and/or public/private contracts.
- Experience teaching with online and/or distance education delivery.

The School of Teacher Education and Leadership (TEAL) continues its tradition of land-grant outreach, delivering quality teacher education to preservice and in-service cohorts.
