Job Summary
Assistant Professor (10-month academic year) of Astronomy
The Georgia College Department of Chemistry, Physics and Astronomy is seeking to fill a position at the level of tenure track Assistant Professor. The successful candidate will primarily teach introductory Astronomy and Astronomy laboratory classes for non-majors, but may also teach other upper and lower level courses in either physics or astronomy. As a tenure track appointment, in addition to teaching, scholarly activity and service are required. While open to all areas of astrophysics, scholarship in the area of computational astrophysics is preferred. Service requirements for this position will include coordinating the publishing of Astronomy and Physics Laboratory manuals. The Department of Chemistry, Physics, and Astronomy at Georgia College supports several facilities for our physics program, including a machine shop, a teaching planetarium, and an on-campus observatory with a 24-inch telescope. Responsibilities
Faculty -Teaching /Instruction
- Teaching introductory and upper level Physics and Astronomy lectures and laboratories as well as integrated physical science.
- Ability to maintain, develop and publish internally developed physics and astronomy laboratory materials, resources and manuals.
- Maintenance, development and setup of equipment for astronomy and physics laboratories.
Faculty -Scholarly Activity
- Ability to successfully mentor undergraduate research.
- Ability to seek internal and external funding to support teaching and research endeavors.
- Attendance and presentations at professional conferences.
Faculty- Service to Institution
- Faculty are expected to demonstrate service that directly impacts the quality of education provided to students and is related to a faculty member’s primary teaching duties.
- Participate in student recruitment and retention activities.
Other Job Duties and Responsibilities:
- Attendance and participation in faculty and administrative meetings, commencement ceremonies, departmental retreats, and other meetings/events as required.
- Curriculum planning, implementation, and evaluation.
- Assessment and evaluation of instruction.
- Professional development.
- Other duties as assigned by the department chair.
- Responsible for maintaining a positive work atmosphere by acting and communicating in a manner to foster teamwork and by providing leadership to subordinates. Requires consistent on-time attendance.
Working Relationships: Must work closely with coworkers in the Department of Chemistry, Physics and Astronomy to ensure the success of departmental courses and programs. Will work daily with faculty, students, and staff across the College of Arts and Sciences. Educational Requirements
Educational Requirements include a Ph.D. in Physics or Astronomy.
Must meet SACSCOC accreditation requirements stated in C.S. 3.7.1 (www.sacscoc.org (faculty credentials))

1) Prior teaching experience in astronomy at the college level.

The faculty employee is expected to have:

- Demonstrable ability to work collegially and effectively with individuals of diverse backgrounds.
- A sufficient understanding of physics and astronomy for teaching any of our upper level courses.
