The Department of Fine Arts at Barry University in Miami Shores, Florida invites applications for an Assistant Professor of Photography.

The Department of Fine Arts offers undergraduate degrees in Studio Art, Art History, Graphic Design and Photography in the Visual Arts and, Music, Theatre/Dance in the Performing Arts as well as graduate degrees (MA & MFA) in Photography.

Our Photography majors gain extensive experience in the discipline of photography and use the photographic image as a vehicle for self-expression and visual communication. They should also demonstrate the highest degree of creative thinking, technical skills, and professionalism in utilizing the medium of photography.

This position is an In-Person position.

Anticipated Start date: August 16th, 2022

Essential Functions

The program goals of the photography curriculum are:

  • To develop and support the mastery of traditional, as well as contemporary digital photographic processes.
  • To nurture and develop a students’ individual aesthetic as a reflection of their originality and creativity.
  • To develop and support a foundation of art historical knowledge in the field.
  • Plan and teach 2/2 undergraduate and/or graduate photography courses (well versed in digital, traditional, and alternative processes) and be able to use CANVAS to organize the course work for students.
  • The ideal candidate would engage students in the creation of their photographic artwork and offer academic advising, supervision of special projects, departmental service, university service, community service, and sustained scholarship.

The Photography Lab Technician duties (20 hours per week) include:

  • Overseeing, scheduling, and training the Fine Arts Studio Monitors.
  • Maintaining all standards for the safety and well-being of the students and facilities.
  • assisting students with use of facilities.
  • Managing photography equipment rentals
  • Maintaining photography labs, equipment and repairing equipment when possible.
  • Managing the inventory of photographic equipment and supplies.
  • Managing the inventory of photographic supplies.
  • assisting with gallery inventory, hanging of exhibitions, and lighting of work.
  • Oversee silver recovery and all safety protocols for photography studios and proper disposal of hazardous waste.
  • Updating all MSDS sheets for photography labs.
  • Working and coordinating jobs with other lab techs.

Qualifications/Requirements

  • The position requires an MFA in Photography.
  • Candidates given strongest consideration will have experience running a photography lab/ lighting studio and related facilities.
  • Candidates should also possess interpersonal skills sufficient to work effectively within an increasingly diverse array of students and colleagues.
  • Candidate should be willing and able to teach in person but can adapt to a blended (hybrid), online environment if necessary.
