Clatsop Community College in beautiful Astoria, Oregon—where the Columbia River meets the Pacific Ocean—is seeking an enthusiastic and motivated full-time Social Sciences instructor. Job Summary

Under the direction of the Chief Academic Officer, this position works collaboratively to provide majors chemistry, general chemistry, and general science instruction to students. The position is also responsible for student laboratory preparation (both biology and chemistry), adherence to OSHA regulations regarding hazardous chemicals and biohazardous materials (all campuses) and keeping the college’s “Chemical Hygiene and Exposure Control” plans up to date. The incumbent consults and coordinates with faculty to identify equipment and supplies needed to support instruction; independently maintains the identified inventory of equipment and supplies, ordering and receiving needed items per college procedure; organizes and maintains storage facilities consistent with OSHA regulations in the science storeroom, MERTS campus, and Art Department; performs (or arranges for) maintenance of laboratory equipment; supervises handling of hazardous and biohazardous waste including proper disposal. May coordinate the work of student employees.

Essential Duties

1. Design and implement instructional activities for chemistry majors and non-majors and general science in classroom and field settings, using sound instructional delivery techniques which meet the needs of students and supporting agencies.

2. Safely work with, instruct, and utilize discipline-appropriate laboratory tools and equipment commonly used in chemistry and molecular biology.

3. Provide curricular guidance for chemistry majors and non-majors general science coursework.

4. Provide instruction as assigned using various modalities determined by need.

5. Work as a team with faculty colleagues to develop, design, implement, evaluate, periodically review, and revise curriculum, course learning outcomes, syllabi, and complete other curriculum-based standards and requirements.

6. Create and evaluate appropriate assessment tools and techniques for student achievement of identified learning objectives and outcomes. Assign grades according to college policies.

7. Provide students with access to instructional evaluations for teaching and learning effectiveness.

8. Provide academic advising to students.

9. Understand and follow FERPA and Title IX laws and policies regarding confidentiality and appropriate teacher/student interactions with mutual respect and fairness.

10. Participate in determining academic policies and procedures of the institution and other appropriate faculty activities of the college.

11. Meet with classes regularly and promptly, maintain student attendance records, and keep regular posted office hours.

12. Maintain professional competence and job qualifications.

13. Consults with instructional faculty using the storeroom resources to set desired level of equipment and supplies and needed laboratory setups

14. Maintains inventory of chemicals, specimens, supplies, and equipment in college laboratories and storerooms on the Lexington and MERTS campuses. Orders or purchases supplies, chemicals, and equipment. Researches technical information and prices including from state contracts for preparing requisitions. Recommends materials for the labs based on quality and price. Coordinates expenditure of available storeroom budgets and maintains records of the storeroom supplies expenditures.

15. Receives ordered materials and equipment, files the appropriate paperwork, inventories the items, and stores the items in the appropriate areas.

16. Maintains and organizes science rooms and laboratories. In charge of writing, updating, and maintaining the Chemical Hygiene and Exposure control plans. Responsible for safety inspections and recordkeeping. Maintains SDS documentation. Properly labels, categories, treats, and stores hazardous waste until off-site transport is possible. Arranges for transport of hazardous waste to proper receiving site.

17. Performs (or arranges for) on-going maintenance of the storeroom and science laboratory equipment. Performs minor equipment repairs.

18. Prepares laboratory materials, equipment, solutions, etc. for science laboratory and instructor demonstration activities in anticipation of the need for them (in consultation with instructors). Records materials list and setup notes for lab activities for replication.

19. Selects, orients, trains, and oversees student employees in the storeroom.

20. Attends Safety Committee meetings.

21. Acts as the Safety Officer in the Incident Command System program at the college.

22. Performs other duties of similar nature as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Skill in operating a computer, word processing, database and spreadsheet applications; read and create e-mail messages; access the intranet system to find and complete forms and read institutional documents; access the internet and the College’s web site; use the calendaring function of the College’s e-mail system; and utilize department specific data entry and/or work order software to facilitate departmental tasks.

    1. Earned master’s degree in chemistry, biology, or other related science degree (must include 18 graduate credits of chemistry or related science course work)
    2. At least one year of experience instructing science at the secondary or post-secondary level
    3. Teaching philosophy that is compatible with a rural community college

Preferred Qualifications

    1. Earned master’s degree in chemistry
    2. Post-secondary experience teaching majors’ or non-majors’ science courses, especially chemistry
    3. Community college teaching experience
    4. Experience teaching with Canvas

Knowledge

    • Knowledge of current issues, trends, and research in chemistry
    • Knowledge of instructional methods appropriate to student achievement of outcomes in the sciences
    • General knowledge of instructional laboratory practice and procedures in chemistry and biology
    • Knowledge of basic procedures and practices of maintaining a supply room and storage area
    • Knowledge of tools, equipment, materials, and supplies which are used in instructional science laboratories and their proper and safe handling
    • Knowledge of supply and inventory procedures for the effective maintenance of stock levels
    • Knowledge of office practices and procedures including filing and the operation of office equipment including personal and on-line computers
    • Knowledge of OSHA regulations regarding storage and disposal of hazardous chemical
    • Knowledge of ICS-100,200,300,400, and ICS safety officer specific skills

    • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals; write routine reports and correspondence; and speak effectively before groups of students or faculty.
    • Ability to maintain bacterial cultures.
    • Ability to effectively communicate and interact with persons of diverse backgrounds and abilities.
    • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with vendors and other stakeholders.
