Position Overview

To be successful in this prestigious role, you will have a track record of research excellence and academic leadership in sustainable business, a history of publishing in top business and management journals, and demonstrated academic leadership, for example, through editorships or membership on editorial boards of well-regarded journals; successful PhD supervision; academic program development; external research funding; and engagement with business. While the emphasis in the role is research leadership, the successful candidate is expected to be an active contributor to the full range of activities in the School, including its teaching programmes, leadership, outreach to the community and profession, and contributions to the wider Massey Business School and University. This role will be a permanent (tenured) professorial appointment, with the role as Deans Chair being an initial term of five years, after which time a further term may be available.

Located in the beautiful South Pacific country of New Zealand, Massey University is one of the world’s top 400 universities, with campuses in Auckland, Palmerston North, and Wellington and a long tradition of academic excellence and innovation in blended learning. Massey University is consistently rated as one of New Zealand’s most attractive employers in the annual Randstad awards. Massey Business School, in which our programmes are housed, is AACSB and AMBA accredited and has New Zealand’s longest running MBA. We are ranked by QS in the top 100 universities in the world for Accounting and Finance and top 200 for Management and Business Studies. In the QS Sustainability Ranking 2023, Massey University is ranked 125th in the world and 22nd in the world for Sustainable Education.

The School of Management, where the position will be located, is one of five units within the Massey Business School, along with the Schools of Accountancy, Economics & Finance, Aviation, and Communication, Journalism & Marketing. The School has a proud record of teaching and research excellence with a history of publications in top ranked journals and book publishers, external research funding, and PhD graduates appointed to positions at well-regarded Universities.

A small number of prestigious Dean’s Chairs are being created to help continue Massey Business School’s journey to excellence in impactful research. The Dean’s Chair in Sustainable Business will be the first of its kind in New Zealand. The occupant of a Dean’s Chair is expected to be a leading scholar in their discipline and to provide academic leadership, particularly research leadership, within the University. The Dean’s Chair [Professor] in Sustainable Business will lead a newly established Centre of Sustainable Business and will work with a critical mass of sustainable business scholars. The position comes with a salary and teaching load commensurate with a top research professor in New Zealand.

Massey University is committed to being a Tiriti-led organisation. It is therefore expected that you will develop an understanding of the Aotearoa New Zealand context and a demonstrable understanding of the needs and aspirations of Māori. We are actively committed to develop a diverse staffing profile that matches New Zealand society as a whole.

The Palmerston North campus is located in the Manawatū region, set between the Tararua and Ruahine ranges in the east and the vast Tasman Sea in the west and offers easy access to many outdoor activities. Located just 1.5 hours from the nation’s capital, Wellington, the Manawatu combines the charm of rural New Zealand with the sophisticated city appeal of Palmerston North. It has a thriving arts and sport scene, is family-friendly, and is reputed to have the highest number of restaurants, eateries and cafe bars per capita in New Zealand.

Albany campus, Massey’s ‘innovation campus’, is located on the North Shore of Auckland, New Zealand’s largest city. The campus is spacious and green with modern facilities and is close to several quality shopping precincts. The area provides easy access to numerous beaches, the Waitemata and Manukau harbours, and is the gateway to the beautiful and historic Northland region.
