Position Summary
Central Michigan University is seeking a creative and energetic librarian to join the CMU Libraries as an Instruction and Outreach Librarian. This full-time, tenure-track position reports to the Associate Dean of University Libraries. The Instruction and Outreach Librarian will be expected to lead the Libraries’ effort to craft and implement a comprehensive instructional strategy in line with the curricular and pedagogical needs of the university. The successful candidate will identify instructional best practices, incorporate student-centered learning outcomes in the Libraries’ instructional activities, and engage in assessment activities.
Incorporation of information literacy standards and the ACRL Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education will be a part of this position. This position is responsible for the administration of LIB 197, a one-credit library skills course. Finally, this librarian is responsible for outreach to student services departments and specific academic programs.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Develop and implement a formalized plan and goals for library instruction to CMU departments and classes.
- Identify instructional best practices and share them with colleagues.
- Incorporate student-centered learning outcomes into all instruction.
- Map information literacy concepts into relevant university courses.
- Engage with other librarians and campus faculty to develop discipline-appropriate instruction.
- Develop innovative tools and services for effective library instruction to face-to-face and online classes.
- Develop and implement methods to assess the effectiveness of library instruction.
- Take primary responsibility for the administration of the library’s LIB 197 course and participate in the teaching rotation.
- Provide instruction sessions to general and introductory courses as needed.
- Monitor trends and best practices in library instruction and incorporate them as applicable within the Libraries’ instructional efforts.
- Liaise to student support services departments including, but not limited to, Academic Advising, Career Development Center, Student Disability Services, and others.
- Liaise to the Honors Program and other academic departments as needed.
- Perform general reference duties, including occasional evening and/or weekend shifts.
Additional responsibilities:
- Serve on library and university committees as appropriate.
- Chair the Libraries’ Curriculum Committee.
- Serve on the Libraries’ Marketing committee and participate in their activities.
- Participate in and contribute to strategic planning to advance the library’s mission and vision.
- Meet university standards for tenure and promotion.
Salary is commensurate with qualifications; minimum $60,000. Excellent benefit package available, including medical, dental and generous retirement contributions.
Required Qualifications
- Master’s degree in library/information science from a program accredited by the American Librarian Association (ALA) or equivalent.
- Familiarity with ACRL Information Literacy Framework & Standards.
- Professional experience in an academic library.
- Successful instructional experience.
- Ability to engage students in active learning and critical thinking.
- Ability to communicate effectively with a diverse community.
- Ability to proactively solve problems independently and in teams.
- Curiosity about and interest in the professional literature and trends.
- Ability and interest in fulfilling faculty requirements for job performance, scholarship, professional development, and service.
- Ability to perform the essential functions of the job without without reasonable accommodations.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience implementing the ACRL Information Literacy Framework & Standards.
- Demonstrated knowledge of instructional design concepts.
- Experience with online instruction tools and methods.
- Demonstrated experience with outreach in an academic setting.
