Description
The Department of Asian and Asian American Studies at Stony Brook University invites applications and nominations for the Nirmal K. and Augustina Mattoo Endowed Chair in Classical Indic Humanities, beginning Fall 2023. The goal of the Mattoo Chair is to advance research in and promote a better appreciation of the contributions to human knowledge made by systems of knowledge having their origin or major development in Classical India. For this appointment, we are looking for an outstanding scholar in: art, aesthetics, classics, cultural anthropology, intellectual history, languages, literatures, linguistics, theories of mind, or religious studies.

The holder of the chair will provide intellectual leadership to the field; complement the existing scholarship in the Asian and Asian American Studies department and contribute to its mission, including the master’s and study abroad programs; collaborate with campus academic units to design and implement initiatives that will mainstream India Studies; pursue a research program resulting in prestigious publications; teach graduate and undergraduate courses and guide research scholars; organize conferences and lecture series; conduct outreach programs; and actively contribute to the mission of the Mattoo Center for India Studies and its robust engagement with the public and the Indian American community.

The endowed Chair will hold the academic rank of tenured full professor in the department of Asian and Asian American Studies and affiliation with other appropriate departments. Advanced associate professors will also be considered. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. Additionally, the successful candidate will have access to research, publication and program funding from the Mattoo Chair Endowment. Stony Brook University is home to the Bishembarnath and Sheela Mattoo Center for India Studies, a respected academic resource and community asset.

Qualifications
Required Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. from a reputed university in art, aesthetics, Indic or South Asian Studies, classics, cultural anthropology, intellectual history, languages and cultural studies, literature, linguistics, psychology, religious studies or related field
  • A record of outstanding scholarship and high standing in the international research community
  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching is crucial for the success of our undergraduate and graduate programs
  • The candidate must have native or near-native proficiency in one of the languages of South Asia and in a language relevant to the study of classical India
  • Potential to build India Studies program on campus
  • Evidence of commitment to diversity and inclusion

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of Sanskrit
  • Experience in working with archives of classical India; expertise in the study of the global impact of classical India
  • community outreach experience.
