All About You

Taylor Geospatial Institute Cluster Hiring Initiative

In April 2022, Saint Louis University (SLU) launched the Taylor Geospatial Institute (TGI) – the nation’s leading geospatial research collaborative, comprising eight of the Midwest’s outstanding research institutions. The TGI is led by Saint Louis University and includes the Danforth Plant Science Center, Harris-Stowe State University, Missouri University of Science and Technology, University of Illinois UrbanaChampaign, University of Missouri-Columbia, University of Missouri-St. Louis, and Washington University in St. Louis. TGI’s vision is to be the nation’s leader in geospatial science research and accelerate the St. Louis region’s development as a global geospatial center of excellence.   We are harnessing the power of partnership with industry, government agencies, and research entities to grow talent and develop core geospatial science and adjacent fields that enable positive impacts on some of the world’s greatest challenges including food systems, geospatial health, and national security. With the goal of becoming a world-class leader and creating a lasting geospatial impact, SLU intends to hire strategically across the University in areas that directly intersect with the TGI. Enabled by the legacy gift supporting TGI, SLU has the opportunity to hire approximately 20 faculty across 3 years, marking our footprint as a world-class research University in geospatial science and adjacent fields while simultaneously multiplying our excellence in our teaching and our mission. This call for faculty positions is part of this exciting cluster hire initiative in geospatial science and adjacent fields.

About the School of Science and Engineering

Saint Louis University is a Catholic, Jesuit institution dedicated to student learning, research, healthcare, and service. The newly formed School of Science and Engineering, founded in 2022, is interdisciplinary by design – bringing together our engineering departments (Aerospace and Mechanical, Biomedical, Civil, and Electrical and Computer Engineering) with our Aviation, Computer Science, Chemistry, Physics, and Earth and Atmospheric Sciences departments. The School offers a wide range of graduate and undergraduate degrees, and our faculty hold funding from sources such as the National Science Foundation, National Institutes of Health, the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, Siemens, and the Missouri and Illinois Departments of Transportation.

The Department of Computer Science supports bachelors, masters, and doctoral programs in computer science and closely related graduate-level programs such as artificial intelligence, bioinformatics, data science, and software engineering. For more information about the department and its hiring, please visit https://cs.slu.edu/hiring.

Job Description and Primary Responsibilities:
Tenure-track faculty members are expected to develop and maintain active research programs and to contribute toward teaching a diverse portfolio of inclusive classes at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Candidates for the tenure-track positions must have a doctoral degree or ABD in computer science or a closely related field and must demonstrate strong potential for both research and teaching.

Given the growing use of GIS tools and technologies in many branches of computer science, the goal if this hire is to further expand connections between TGI and Computer Science.  Area of focus is restricted to GIS, broadly interpreted; possible examples include trajectory analysis, GIS algorithms for visualization and analysis of large scale data, spatial patterns, AI/ML applications of GIS, graph neural networks, and responsible spatial computing.

Key Qualifications:

Applicants must submit a cover letter, CV, and contact information for at least three individuals who can provide reference letters. Supplemental documents also should be submitted to the system including a research statement (for tenure-track applicants), a teaching statement, and a statement addressing how the applicant’s efforts can support an inclusive and diverse community.
