IST 718: Big Data Analytics: A broad introduction to analytical processing tools and techniques for information professionals. Students will develop a portfolio of resources, demonstrations, recipes, and examples of various analytical techniques.
After taking this course, students will be able to:
* Translate a business challenge into an analytics challenge.
* Use linear and logistic regression, decision trees, and neural networks to make predictions.
* Use data science to gain actionable insights.
* Use Python and Apache Spark to build big data analytics pipelines.
* Learn classic and state of the art machine learning techniques.
* Explain how advanced analytics can be leveraged to create a competitive advantage.Qualifications
- Degree in Computer Science, Information Management, Applied Data Science or related field.
- Master’s preferred, plus five or more years experience in data visualization and analytics, machine learning, python, and big data projects preferred.
Successful candidates will be prepared to serve as instructor and mentor and be willing to work with the Professor of Record and other instructors teaching this class. This course has a developed syllabus, exercises, and texts, however, we seek individuals who can bring their own experiences to the course.
* Collaborate with professor of record and/or program director, who is responsible for creating the course syllabus and course content, as well as providing an overview of their overall vision for the course.
* Attend onboarding and training with the iSchool’s Faculty Center for Teaching and Learning (FCTL)
* Maintain office hours and open communication with students.
* Maintain the course in the Blackboard Learning Management system
* Grade student assignments and exams in a timely manner; provide feedback when appropriate.
* Prepare for weekly in-person sessions with students
