Job description

The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) is a Carnegie R1 and community engaged university at the heart of the U.S.-Mexico border region that is increasing access to excellent higher education. We advance discovery of public value and positively impact the health, culture, education, and economy of the community we serve. UTEP enrolls 25,000 students – 84% of whom are Hispanic and half of whom are the first in their families to attend college. UTEP offers 170 bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degree programs at the only open-access, top-tier research university in America.

The city’s border location makes it an ideal venue for academic programs and research studies on topics of national interest such as bilingual education/language acquisition, Hispanic health disparities, border environment and immigration, environmental sustainability and infrastructure, and international trade and commerce.

El Paso’s active arts and culture community features the state’s longest-running symphony orchestra, a nationally recognized chamber music festival, a vibrant street art and mural scene, art galleries, museums, and a full schedule of seasonal events and festivals. UTEP adds to the arts and entertainment scene with concerts and live events at the city’s largest indoor and outdoor venues; theater, music and dance productions; contemporary and student art galleries; and a natural history museum and desert gardens. El Paso residents can also easily travel to our sister city of Ciudad Jurez, Mexico, to enjoy great food, markets and cultural events.

El Paso is also an ideal location for people who love the outdoors, as home to one of the nation’s largest urban parks – Franklin Mountains State Park – and many options for year-round hiking, mountain biking and rock climbing.

For sports fans, the UTEP Miners offer exciting Division I college athletics at several campus venues including Sun Bowl Stadium – where one of the oldest football bowl games takes place annually – and the Don Haskins Center arena. Southwest University Park, located a mile away in lively downtown El Paso, is home to the El Paso Chihuahuas, the Triple-A baseball affiliate of the San Diego Padres, and the El Paso Locomotive FC, a professional soccer team founded in 2019.

Job Description:

The College of Engineering (CoEN) and the Department of Metallurgical, Materials and Biomedical Engineering (MMBME) at The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) invite applications for a faculty position at an advanced rank to begin in the fall of 2025. Candidates may be considered at the Associate or Full Professor rank based on qualifications and experience.

With the growth and importance of the mining economy in Texas and nationally, the University of Texas Board of Regents committed $20M to restart the Mining Engineering at UTEP. The Mining Engineering program builds on the rich legacy of mining at UTEP and in the region. Through community action, the university was formed in 1914 as the State School for Mines and Metallurgy before joining the University of Texas System in 1919 as the Texas College of Mines and Metallurgy. Mining Engineering continued to be offered until 1966. The restart of the program comes with UT Regents support as Texas has developed the largest non-fuel mineral production economy in the US (USGS: Mineral Commodity Summary 2024). The program will be the only Mining Engineering program in Texas and will be relaunched with strong support from industrial partners who wish to build a world-class and modern Mining Engineering program.

The department welcomes applications from candidates in all areas of mining and associated fields. The successful candidate will be responsible for guiding the restart of the program and, thus, we seek candidates with a broad vision of mining and mining engineering education in the 21st century. The successful candidate should have deep connections with the national mining community and be receptive to input from across the field when building the program. Prior academic leadership, program management or administrative experience is preferred.

We are interested in a dynamic person who can connect across existing strengths and expertise at UTEP. Priority will be given to the originality and promise of the candidate’s vision for the Mining Engineering program within the larger umbrella of UTEP’s vision and mission of providing access to excellent higher education. The successful candidate will be strongly supported to build a premier, accredited Mining Engineering program with world-class faculty and facilities, a forward-looking curriculum that engages students, strong connections to the mining industry, and collaborations across UTEP. Within the department, the candidate will be required to maintain a strong synergy with the Metallurgical and Materials Engineering programs.

Requirements:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: A Ph.D. in Mining Engineering or related field. Demonstrated scholarly and/or administrative achievements as evidenced by a track record of publications and/or professional accomplishments. Excellent communication and organizational skills.

OPTIONAL QUALIFICATIONS: Candidates at the Associate or Full Professor level must have a demonstrated record of excellence and professional accomplishments commensurate with the rank and the ability to build an academic program.

Additional Information:

SALARY: Rank and salary are commensurate with qualifications and experience.
