Job description

The Department of History and Political Science at Bethany College seeks to fill a tenure-track position for the 2019-2020 academic year. The primary field is European History. We are open to candidates from a variety of specializations from the Renaissance to the Twentieth Century. We are particularly interested in candidates who can make connections between Europe and other regions, and a secondary field in African history, Atlantic history, Latin American history, or the history of imperialism would be a plus. Candidates who can contribute to the study of the environment or public health and/or to leading short-term study abroad programs are particularly encouraged to apply as these interdisciplinary fields advance institutional goals. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute a wide range of courses to at least two subfields of the discipline.

Candidates must demonstrate a commitment to liberal arts education and to engaging students in active undergraduate research. All Bethany faculty are expected to make contributions to student advising, program assessment, committee service, and student recruitment and retention.

This appointment will commence in August 2019.

Ph.D. in History or a related field preferred, ABD considered; teaching experience is essential. There is the possibility of appointment at an advanced Assistant Professor level if qualifications and time in rank merit.

How to apply

Please provide letter of application, CV, statement of teaching interests, 3 letters of recommendation, teaching evaluations (if available), a writing sample, and unofficial copies of both graduate and undergraduate transcript via email to with “Application for European History Position” in the subject line.
