Job Description
The Department of Sociology and Criminal Justice at Old Dominion University (ODU) invites applicants for an Assistant or Associate Professor position to begin in Fall 2025 as part of a multi-position hiring initiative for Trustworthy AI. This multi-position cluster hire is part of ODU’s Centennial Cluster Initiative, which supports the expansion of transdisciplinary research efforts by prioritizing the hiring of multiple faculty positions targeting specific research areas. The Trustworthy AI cluster hire involves interdisciplinary collaboration among School of Cybersecurity, Department of Computer Science, and Department of Sociology & Criminal Justice, and builds on existing interdisciplinary strengths at ODU. This position is expected to be a tenure track appointment, but an initial appointment with tenure will be considered for exceptionally qualified candidates.
We are seeking a criminologist or sociologist whose research addresses applications of Trustworthy AI in Cyber Criminology, with an emphasis on Fairness, Accountability, Transparency, and Ethics (FATE) in AI, to teach online and on-campus courses in our undergraduate programs in Criminal Justice and Ph.D. in Criminology & Criminal Justice and develop new courses at the intersection of AI and cyber criminology.

As the first step of that initiative, we seek to hire 25 scholars who can contribute to the university’s growing research and teaching portfolio in the area of artificial intelligence. Those scholars will be housed in departments across campus and work together on scholarly activities related to artificial intelligence.Position Type

A doctoral degree in Criminology, Criminal Justice, or Sociology is required. ABD candidates who are expected to complete their degree by August 2025 will also be considered.Minimum required level and type of experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities
- Demonstrated ability to teach at the undergraduate and/or graduate levels in Cybercrime and Trustworthy AI.
- Demonstrated ability to conduct research and publish in cybercrime and Trustworthy AI.

Candidates applying for an Associate Professor appointment must also have evidence of success in obtaining federal grants.Preferred Qualifications

About the Department
The Department of Sociology and Criminal Justice offers bachelor’s degrees in Sociology and in Criminal Justice and a Ph.D. in Criminology & Criminal Justice. The program director for the Interdisciplinary major of Cybercrime is on the faculty and faculty in the department teach several courses in cybercrime as well as classes cross listed with the School of Cybersecurity which offers MS in Cybersecurity with a Concentration in Cyber Conflict and Cyber Crime. Our PhD in Criminology & Criminal Justice is a sociological criminology program that highlights social inequality and public policy in the study of crime and justice issues. In addition, we are in the process of proposing a MS Criminology program. The department has an accomplished, collaborative, and diverse faculty and student body committed to equality, social justice, and transformative policies and practices and the successful candidate will enrich this environment. Opportunities exist to participate in ODU’s Institute for the Study of Race and Ethnicity, Department of Women’s Studies, School of Cybersecurity, and School of Public Health.
