Description

The Department of Military and Family Support Director will assist with a variety of initiatives and practices that target and promote student success. The DMFS Director will report to the Assistant Vice President of Enrollment, as the Department of Military and Family Support will be housed under the Admissions umbrella. The DMFS Director will be responsible for all Veteran Services to include recruitment, retention, and student life. This is a benefit eligible, full-time, 12-month position.
The DMFS Director will be expected to independently control and complete all Veteran Support Services program coordination and requirements, including VA Certifications and related events. She or he will also assist with the development and implementation of current and new student services that foster positive academic growth and development, while improving student retention.
The DMFS Director will play a vital role with student advising and academic counseling. Student Advising and Academic Counseling includes but is not limited to: student registration, new student programs (GSC Orientation & GSC 100), financial aid counseling, academic intervention and recovery, academic planning/degree mapping, course withdraws, career planning, referral/scheduling tutoring/study hall sessions or other appropriate services, etc.
The DMFS Director will be expected to work directly and holistically with first year students, at-risk students, and Veteran/Veteran dependents with the goal of fostering student success and perseverance. She or he will also establish and maintain liaisons with faculty, staff, and community members to ensure transparency, collaboration, and student success/retention.
The DMFS Director will coordinate, maintain, and update various data records/reports and effectively communicate the results of same with the appropriate personnel and departments across campus.

Examples of Duties

Duties may include, but are not limited to:

  • VA Certifications in VA Once
  • Monitoring of VA Reports to ensure accuracy in certifications
  • Successful Completion of Military Friendly Status/Five-Star Challenge(s)
  • Assist eligible students in applying for VA Benefits
  • Maintaining/Documenting appropriate student records and data (VA & Incoming/Currently attending students)
  • Provides subject matter expertise to internal and external stakeholders including but not limited to serving on campus committees, guest lectures, delivering activities, and serving as an advisor
  • Supervises all assigned VA Work-Study student employees, which typically includes recommendations for hiring, firing, performance evaluation, training, work allocation, and problem resolution.
  • Provides information for current students regarding course withdrawal, program withdrawal, academic probation, academic suspension, academic disqualification, academic grievance procedure, attendance, or other related policy and procedural matters.
  • Assist in Student Registration/Advising Processes
  • Assist with on campus events and travel to in and out of state fairs to recruit VA eligible students.
  • Support undergraduate admissions when needed.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Candidate must demonstrate strong verbal and interpersonal communication skills, as well as the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a wide range of constituencies in the university community. Must also demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively in writing. Strong listening skills and the ability to empathetic to student needs are essential.

Candidate must have strong time management, organizational and planning skills with the ability to prioritize, and manage competing priorities. Must also demonstrate the ability to adhere to and enforce institution policies and guidelines. A strong commitment to confidentiality and professionalism is essential, as the person in this role will be called on to handle confidential information with discretion.

Candidate must possess strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills with the ability to be an innovative thinker and suggest creative solutions. Must also be must be open-minded and optimistic to effectively support and guide students. Strong coaching and counseling skills with the ability assist students in setting and accomplishing skills are required.

Basic computer skills are required. A working knowledge in Microsoft Office/Excel is required.

Typical Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree is required, Master’s Degree preferred.
A minimum of two years of professional work experience in Higher Education is preferred, may include graduate assistant positions.

Experience in meeting the academic support needs of the university population of students; including first generation, low income, academically at-risk students, athletes, non-traditional, international or any other under-represented group of students is preferred.

Familiarity with academic advising, student success research, and understanding of factors that drive retention is desirable.
Any equivalent combination of education and/or experience is acceptable which provides an applicant the listed knowledge, skills, and abilities and the capability to perform the essential functions of the job.
