Position Summary:
Individuals appointed from this pool will have the primary responsibility to teach courses within the Division of Social Sciences including:

Criminology & Criminal Justice – SOU offers a Bachelor’s degree in Criminology and Criminal Justice (CCJ) that prepares students for a wide variety of employment in such organizations as governmental agencies, law enforcement, public agencies, and the prison system. The CCJ program seeks applicants that can teach either or both online and traditional courses in support of the CCJ degree. Specific needs vary by term, but individuals with experience teaching introductory courses in Criminal law, criminology and law enforcement are encouraged to apply. Economics – SOU offers a Bachelor’s degree in Economics that prepares students for a wide variety of employment in such organizations as governmental agencies, consulting firms, public interest groups, and not-for-profit organizations, and law firms. The Economics degree prepares students to work in a variety of administrative, management, and financial positions. Instructional needs include introductory courses in both macro and microeconomics. History – SOU offers a Bachelor’s degree in History that prepares students for a wide variety of employment in such organizations as governmental agencies, media, and not-for-profit organizations. The degree also prepares students for graduate programs in history, public policy, law, education, and business. Applicants with experience in both U.S. and World History are invited to apply. Political Science – SOU offers a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science that prepares students for a wide variety of employment in such organizations as governmental agencies, consulting firms, public interest groups, and not-for-profit-organizations. The degree also prepares students for graduate programs in political science, public policy, law, education, and business. The Political Science program seeks applicants that can teach either or both online and traditional courses in support of the Political Science degree. Specific needs vary by term, but individuals with experience teaching introductory surveys, public policy, law, American politics, and international politics are encouraged to apply. Psychology – We are seeking candidates who can demonstrate both academic preparation at the Master’s degree level (Ph.D. preferred) and experience teaching in the following areas; I/O, learning and memory, behavioral neuropsychology, and personality. We are also seeking candidates with experience teaching both introductory psychology and research methods. Willingness and ability to teach using online methods is desirable. Sociology & Anthropology (SOAN) – The sociology and anthropology degree offers students a major based on the shared intellectual foundations and methods of inquiry of two distinct social science disciplines. The program also supports the Human Service degree, Social Justice minor and certificates in Cultural Resource Management and Regional Studies and Applied Research. The SOAN curriculum emphasizes an appreciation of cultural diversity and a critical, historical, and comparative perspective on social worlds. Qualified applicants will have experience teaching introductory college-level courses. Applicants with experience in either Sociology or Anthropology are invited to apply. Gender, Sexuality, and Women’s Studies – Teaching emphasis on Gender, Sexuality and Women Studies but instruction may also include Humanities, Social Sciences, Policy and Culture. Classes both face to face and online are offered. In your cover letter, please address your areas of expertise.

International Studies – The International Studies program offers a major and minor in International Studies, and also a minor in Latin American Studies. The program is interdisciplinary in nature and draws upon courses from several departments on campus. At times, the program has a need for adjunct faculty to teach an Introduction to International Studies course or upper division courses, particularly in areas such as regional and country studies or international political economy. Native American Studies – The Native American Studies program has an ongoing need for adjunct instructors to teach various Native American Studies courses at the undergraduate level in a variety of sub-disciplines, on a temporary, part-time, limited-duration basis. Instructional needs include Native American traditional ecological knowledge, languages of Native America, Native language revitalization, Indigenous ethnobotany, and various Native American topics. Clinical Mental Health Counseling (Master’s Degree) – SOU’s Master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling is a CACREP-accredited program which prepares graduates for careers as Licensed Professional Counselors. We are seeking adjunct instructors to teach on a temporary, part-time basis. Viable candidates will have, at minimum, completed a Master’s degree in Counseling or a closely related field (social work, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, marriage and family therapy). Content areas we are seeking include Counseling Theory, Career Counseling, and Group Counseling, and Assessment. We also seek supervisors for our individual and group practicum courses. Remote and online teaching is possible. In your cover letter, please specify the course or courses you are prepared to teach and your current licensure status.

Minimum Qualifications:
Most positions are anticipated to be hired at the adjunct instructor level.

Adjunct Instructor (term-by-term):
Initial appointment at the rank of Instructor requires a Masters or terminal degree in the discipline taught, or a related field;
OR
Bachelors degree in the discipline taught, or a related field, plus equivalency of Masters degree in years of professional experience in the field.
Demonstrated teaching potential.
Familiarity with the appropriate equipment as required for the discipline.

Adjunct Assistant Professor:
Initial appointment at the rank of Adjunct Assistant Professor requires a terminal degree in the discipline taught, or a related field;
OR
Masters degree in the discipline taught, or a related field, and is in the process of completing the appropriate terminal degree.
Demonstrated teaching potential.
Familiarity with the appropriate equipment as required for the discipline.

Preferred Qualification:
Adjunct Instructor (term-by-term):
Masters degree in the discipline taught, or a related field
Demonstrated potential for excellence in teaching and active participation in the life of the institution.
Commitment to student learning, retention, support, and assessment are critical.

Adjunct Assistant Professor:
Demonstrated potential for excellence in teaching, development of a record of scholarship and active participation in the life of the institution and profession.
Work experience that equates to one-academic year of full-time college teaching, or one-academic year of the combination of part-time teaching experience while a graduate student.
Professional experience in the field related to teaching assignment, particularly if working with more advanced students

Special Conditions
Must be willing to travel and attend training programs off-site for occasional professional development.
Must be able to work additional hours and adjust working hours to meet special jobs. May be called back periodically to perform work as needed on an emergency basis.
