Overview

The Center for Latino and Latin American Studies and the Department of
Sociology seek a Visiting Assistant Professor in Latinx Sociology whose research andteaching center issues related to U.S. Latinx populations.

We are seeking an interdisciplinary scholar who works at the intersection of Latinx Studies and Sociology and who holds intellectual and pedagogical expertise in areas such as (but not limited to):

  • international migration;
  • social inequalities;
  • social movements and protest;
  • criminology;
  • health disparities
  • environmental justice;
  • population dynamics; and/or
  • race and ethnicity

The Visiting Assistant Professor will teach three courses per semester. The initial appointment will be for one year with the possibility of extension for one additional year.

Qualified candidates dedicated to empowering students from underserved communities through their research, teaching, creative and pedagogical scholarship, community engagement, service and/or mentoring are strongly encouraged to apply. Scholars of discovery, integration, engagement, and pedagogy are all important to the NIU community. Successful applicants will teach classes within their (inter-)disciplinary expertise, as well as in conjunction with the academic diversity center where they will hold a joint appointment.

Position Summary

The Visiting Assistant Professor is expected to establish an active and innovative research program that directly engages Latinx Studies. The ideal candidate will teach undergraduate and graduate courses in Latinx Studies as well as meeting curricular needs of the Department of Sociology. The position will teach courses in their areas of expertise as well as “Introduction to Latinx Studies.”

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Duties will include:

  • Teaching undergraduate and graduate courses;
  • Engaging in appropriate scholarly activities in the field
  • Collaborating and contributing to ongoing research projects with faculty;
  • Providing service to the university and the profession;
  • Contribute to exam committees, thesis committees, and dissertation committees as needed.

Minimum Required Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Sociology, Latinx Studies, or related field
  • Demonstrable commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion
