Job Summary: The Professional Mathematics & Science Tutor assists students in online and face-to-face tutoring sessions to increase their academic knowledge of subject area concepts, college technologies, and college skills. The tutor serves in an embedded support role for designated classes, designs and conducts study sessions or workshops, and creates tutorials or other learning materials to aid students.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor degree in Mathematics, a Mathematics-intensive subject area, Chemistry, or Biology (particularly Anatomy & Physiology coursework).
  • Experience in teaching or tutoring.
  • Demonstrated good interpersonal communication skills and ease in relating to a diverse student population.
  • Computer skills, especially in the areas of Microsoft Office, instructional software, learning management system, subject related technology, and online conferencing.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ability to tutor students in two of the following areas: Mathematics, Chemistry, and Biology (particularly Anatomy & Physiology coursework).
  • CRLA and/or ACTLA tutor certification.

Physical Demands

  • Work is normally performed in a general office environment.
  • Work performed requires sensitivity and responsiveness to changing goals, priorities, and needs.
  • This position requires light physical activity and movement; employee must possess mobility to work in a standard office setting and use standard office equipment, including a computer; vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; and hearing and speech to communicate in person, before groups, and over the telephone or during virtual meetings. Must possess the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects up to 25 pounds with the use of proper equipment. Reasonable accommodations will be made for individuals on a case-by-case basis.

Description of Job Duty

  • Meets with students individually or in small groups to give learning assistance in qualified subjects.
  • Serves as embedded tutor for designated courses.
  • Maintains regularly scheduled hours for Tutoring Services for tutoring and embedded support.
  • Assists students in navigating relevant course technology.
  • Incorporates principles and strategies of digital literacy and academic success coaching into tutoring interactions.
  • Develops and conducts study sessions or workshops in collaboration with appropriate personnel.
  • Creates tutorials and other learning materials for students to be posted online.
  • Communicates with faculty for appropriate alignment of tutoring, study session, or embedded course content support. Consults Disability Services for advice in providing accommodations in the tutoring environment.
  • Maintains records of tutoring and study sessions. Participates in departmental assessment of student learning outcomes as appropriate.
  • Follows tutoring and educational best practices, including maintaining confidentiality and professionalism.
  • Participates in professional development to ensure quality tutoring practices for all delivery formats, especially adhering to CRLA and ACTLA certification standards.
  • Performs other related duties and responsibilities as assigned.
