The Department of Literacy, Educational Foundations, and Technology in the College of Education and Community Innovation (CECI) at Grand Valley State University (GVSU) seeks a colleague for a tenure-track appointment at the Assistant Professor rank in English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) to begin in August 2026. We seek candidates from a diverse pool of scholars with expertise (teaching and/or research) in TESOL, ESOL, or ESL. We particularly invite applications from candidates who can demonstrate professional and applied experiences with PreK-12 schools and community engagement. Candidates with demonstrated experience with social justice and/or inclusion initiatives/training are preferred. The open position is for an Assistant Professor, subject to funding approval.

Primary Duties:

  • Teach undergraduate and graduate courses on and related to ESOL in both face-to-face and online modalities (three courses in the fall semester, three courses in the winter semester).
  • Advise students in the teacher education program.
  • Developing and maintaining a scholarly research agenda.
  • Willingness to provide services to the institution, community, and profession.
  • Willingness and ability to travel to all GVSU sites, including distance sites, for instruction.
  • The working hours may be out of the normal 8am-5pm weekdays.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ph.D., Ed. D., or ABD (with an expected graduation by August 1, 2026) in TESOL, ESOL, ESL or in Teacher Education or related field with a concentration of TESOL, ESOL, or ESL.
  • Demonstrated potential for university teaching in one or more of the following areas: ESL assessment; ESL teaching methods, or ESL educational research methods; socio-cultural or socio-linguistic aspects of teaching and learning; teacher education.
  • Positive record of experience (teaching, research, other professional roles) in Pre-K-12 environments and/or higher education settings.
  • Demonstrated understanding of and/or commitment to teaching students from diverse backgrounds.
  • Effective oral, written, and collaborative interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated qualities of a team player.
  • Commitment to using various modalities of instruction including: face-to-face, online synchronous, asynchronous, hybrid, and distance learning technologies as well as deliver courses in the evenings and on weekends.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Strong background in culturally responsive teaching/pedagogy and understanding of the challenges of teaching students from diverse backgrounds.
  • Completion of doctoral studies.
  • Evidence of student-centered and relationship-centered teaching.
  • Demonstrated commitment to teaching with a reflective lens.
  • Being open minded to new knowledge, information, and phenomena.
  • Demonstrated engagement with or interest in using a variety of pedagogies that consider multiple forms of linguistic, language, cultural aspects.
  • Evidence of an active research agenda.
  • Evidence of collaborative endeavors with colleagues (e.g., research, teaching, curriculum development, etc.)

Working Conditions: Normal office environment. Some travel may be required.

Salary & Benefits: $64,000 – $66,000, commensurate with experience.
