Job Summary

Salt Lake Community College (SLCC) is seeking a dedicated and collaborative Education faculty member, with a commitment to excellence in teaching, professional activity, and service, who embraces the distinct mission of community colleges and the needs of students at open-access institutions.

JOB OVERVIEW:

Under general supervision, the faculty member will prepare and teach lecture, hybrid, broadcast, and distance-learning Education (EDU) courses as assigned by the department. This position will include the development and teaching of Education courses, including courses within the faculty member’s area of expertise. The faculty member will serve the department, school, college, and larger community by attending both general and discipline-specific forums and meetings. Faculty are expected to serve on College and Department committees, community committees, engage with the community in multiple roles, and mentor departmental adjunct faculty. The faculty member will also participate in professional development activities.

The faculty member will teach an average of 15 instructional units (credit hours) per semester in the Education Program at Salt Lake Community College. Regular full-time faculty members teach assigned day, evening, and weekend classes in accordance with established guidelines and policies. Faculty participate in advising, committee assignments, academic and institutional support activities, and supervisory responsibilities, as assigned. Much of the assigned teaching load may consist of introductory courses including the coordination of Concurrent Enrollment courses in local high schools. Duties will include participation in curriculum development and coordination of the periodic review of the Education Program in collaboration with other faculty members. The base salary, based on a 9-month academic year, is distributed over 12 months. Additional compensation opportunities may be available-subject to course demand-for teaching beyond the standard 15 instructional units (Fall and Spring ) and/or teaching during the Summer Semester, which is paid up to 23.5% of the base salary.

All SLCC employees must maintain permanent residence/address within the State of Utah to maintain employment. A permanent Utah address must be recorded to Human Resources within 30 days of your employment start date.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities & Knowledge Skills & Abilities

Familiarize and abide by all college policies with immediate priority given to those policies that govern interactions with colleagues, staff, administrators, and departments throughout the organization.

Maintain professional etiquette in communications with students, staff, faculty, and administrators.

Work closely with department peers and administrators to understand processes and procedures leading to success as a contributing teacher and member of the academic unit.

TEACHING:

Learning Environment and Student Engagement

  • Create an effective, supportive learning environment for students regardless of delivery method.
  • Promote development of critical thinking among students.
  • Demonstrate incorporation of active and applied learning in courses taught (hands-on and engaged activities).
  • Assist in maintaining a safe and mutually respectful instructional environment.
  • Maintain a significant campus presence, responding to instruction and daily needs of students, departments, college, and community.
  • Meet with students outside of class a minimum of 5 hours/week in person or on-line.

Course Delivery and Curriculum

  • Teach courses consistent with department procedures, the appropriate Course Curriculum Outline (CCO), and catalog description.
  • Provide each student with a syllabus (paper or online) on the first day of class that complies with department procedures and CCO.
  • Teach assigned classes during the required contact hours at the scheduled time and place.
  • Be available to teach courses at times directed by academic needs of the program and availability of staffing pool. The department recommends final teaching assignments with the final decision determined by the Academic Administrator.
  • Use appropriate resources and technology in the delivery of courses.
  • Actively participate in the update and production of new curriculum development and related activities as a contributing team member of the program area, department, campus, college, and state.

Assessment and Feedback

  • Conduct a variety of appropriate evaluations of student performance. Inform students of progress to date periodically and assign and submit grades by published deadlines.
  • Provide appropriate and timely feedback for all assignments.
  • Return graded assignments in a timely fashion per department standards.
  • Maintain student attendance records (for Financial Aid purposes) and grades.
  • Consistently improve course quality, design, and course integrity through participation in college-wide assessment of student learning.

Professionalism and Collegiality

  • Maintain professional and collegial behavior as defined in the Faculty Handbook.
  • Respond to voicemail and email communication promptly (generally within 1-2 contract days).
  • Meet all deadlines.
  • Maintain professional appearance as defined by the discipline and/or College procedure.
  • Partner with the college to provide innovation and improve the learning environment.

Collaboration and Supervision

  • Collaborate with colleagues for instructional improvement.
  • Coordinate and supervise field experience and Community-Engaged Learning projects, as assigned.

Incident and Policy Compliance

  • Prepare and submit incident reports to the Dean of Student Services for inappropriate student behavior as defined by the Code of Student Rights and Responsibilities Policy.

Maintaining and Expanding Professional Skills

  • Maintain necessary educational credentials, professional skills, and demonstrated teaching competencies consistent with department standards.
  • Expand knowledge in discipline and teaching craft on an ongoing basis.
  • Complete required training and participate in professional development.
  • Solicit feedback and implement suggestions from students and peers, when appropriate.

Mentorship and Collaboration

  • Participate in collegial mentoring relationships, serving as mentor and/or mentee in the department and college.
  • Promote professional development of peers/colleagues through recognized professional activities (in-service activities and the presentation of conference papers and/or publications, and other methodologies appropriate to the teaching field), as approved by the department.

Engagement with Professional and Community Organizations

  • Engage in local, state, and/or national professional organizations appropriate to the faculty role.
  • Serve community partners as content area experts, when needed.

SERVICE:

Institutional and Committee Service

  • Provide service to the institution through appropriate participation in academic and campus committee assignments.
  • Offer adequate service on at least one department, school, or college-wide committee.
  • Serve on tenure sitting committees for department colleagues, when appropriate.
  • Serve on tenure sitting committees, as needed.
  • Attend Convocation, Professional Development Day, Commencement, and other institutional meetings (e.g., department meetings).

Collaboration, Mentorship, and College Values

  • Promote, model, and exhibit the College Values with colleagues, students, and community stakeholders.
  • Mentor new faculty as assigned.
  • Provide leadership and instructional integrity through classroom observation, mentoring, and evaluation of part-time employees.
  • Respond to discussions and requests for department work in a timely manner (e.g., answers email, completes task assignments, etc.).

Advising and Student Support

  • Handle/respond to student concerns/complaints.
  • Assume an active role in the student advising process, formal, and/or informal, per departmental guidelines.
  • Meet with and update the advising office. Update and maintain advising materials per departmental guidelines.
  • Develop and/or participate in student recruitment and retention strategies (Career and Majors Fair, Pathways to Professions, informal outreach, etc.).
  • Assist with assessment of credit for prior learning, as needed.

Program and Curriculum Development

  • Review and recommend program textbooks and/or materials.
  • Evaluate and revise program offerings/materials on an ongoing basis and develop new curricula, as needed.

  • Know and enforce FERPA guidelines and other pertinent federal regulations.

  • Maintain inventory, if appropriate, of equipment, tools, supplies, storage/disposal of hazardous materials required for classes, and request appropriate equipment repair.

  • Identify budgetary needs and priorities within the program, as applicable.

  • Ability to communicate effectively with a broad range of people with a variety of abilities and backgrounds, to maintain good working relationships across the College.
  • Ability to work with all groups from a variety of academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds, and with community college students, faculty, and staff, including those with disabilities.

All Faculty will maintain an on-site campus presence to encourage in-person relationships and create engaging, meaningful, and impactful learning experiences.

Minimum qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Special Education (or a master’s degree in Elementary Education or Secondary Education with an endorsement in Special Education), from a regionally-accredited college or university.
  • Professional Teaching License current within the past three years.
  • Within the past 10 years, a minimum of three years of full-time salaried teaching experience in Special Education as a licensed teacher of record in a K-12 classroom. (Paraeducator, substitute teaching, and student teaching experiences do not count.)

Educational Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in Education from a regionally-accredited college or university.

Teaching and Pedagogical Experience:

  • Professional Teaching License in Utah, current within the past three years.
  • Within the past 10 years, four or more years of full-time salaried teaching experience in Special Education as a licensed teacher of record in a K-12 classroom. (Paraeducator, substitute teaching, and student teaching experiences do not count.) Preference will increase with each successive year beyond the minimum requirement.
  • Experience teaching face-to-face and/or online courses at an accredited institution of higher education. Additional preference will be given to applicants with three or more years of full-time teaching experience or six years of part-time teaching experience.
  • Experience providing Professional Development training to other educators.
  • Experience teaching Research Methods and Design.
  • Experience creating and implementing integrated curriculum in the classroom
  • Demonstrated effectiveness in reaching students of different backgrounds.

Research and Administrative Skills:

  • Experience in facilitating undergraduate research.
  • Experience in grant writing and grant management.
  • Fluency in American Psychological Association (APA) formatting.
