Position Description
The Department of Geology and Geological Engineering is seeking candidates with a strong research expertise in the field of Geohazards and ground movements (e.g., in natural and anthropogenic terrains), as well as relevant teaching experience. The selected candidate will be expected to teach in the department’s programs at the undergraduate and graduate level, develop an innovative and well-funded research program that complements the strengths of our existing programs.
The responsibilities associated with this position include:
- Teaching and supervising students at the undergraduate and graduate levels;
- Conducting research and publishing in areas related to the position;
- Participating in the pedagogical and administrative activities of the department and Faculty;
- Engaging in external academic activities that contribute to the visibility of the Faculty and University.
Selection Criteria
The selection criteria are as follows:
- Hold a bachelor’s degree in geological engineering or another related engineering program, and a Ph.D. in a discipline relevant to the teaching and research areas targeted by this position, or be close to completing a Ph.D. (thesis submitted);
- Relevance of academic training and experience to the identified field;
- Demonstration of the ability to conduct university-level research;
- Potential to develop an autonomous and original research program in the identified field;
- Demonstration of, or potential ability, to teach at all university levels, supervise graduate students, and engage in pedagogical innovation;
- Demonstration of potential or commitment to community service;
- As Université Laval is a French-language institution, the selected candidate must be able to provide high-quality instruction in French or commit to being able to do so within a maximum of three years;
- Be a registered member of a Canadian professional engineering association or be able to become one within a maximum of three years;
- Commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) in science and engineering;
- The candidate’s professional potential must align with the following key competencies required for the professorial role:

Appointment and Compensation
Salary will be determined in accordance with the collective bargaining agreement in effect at the time of hiring.
Additional Information
The Department of Geology and Geological Engineering consists of a team of 13 professors who teach approximately 150 undergraduate students and supervise over 80 graduate students. Research in the department is organized around four main thematics: geomaterials, mineral resources, natural hazard analysis, and hydrogeology.
