Job Summary
The University of Texas at Tyler, a dynamic and growing institution committed to fostering academic excellence and innovation, invites applications for the position of Chair of the Department of Political Science. This is an internal search and only candidates from within the university will be considered. This is an exceptional opportunity for a visionary leader to contribute to a thriving academic community. The Chair will provide strategic leadership and direction for all aspects of the department and have responsibility for the coordination and administration of the overall academic agenda and education activities in the department, including program assessment. The Chair will lead the department toward its mission and set a vision for its growth. The Chair will be responsible for pursuing and achieving departmental excellence in teaching, research, and service. Reporting directly to the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, the Chair will be instrumental in shaping the departments future, enhancing its reputation, and ensuring its success in alignment with the colleges strategic goals. This is a fulltime, on campus position.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead with vision and integrity, serving as a role model in scholarship, teaching, and professional service.
  • Mentor faculty and staff, promoting professional development and nurturing emerging leaders.
  • Enhance departmental presence on campus and in the community through active participation and public engagement.
  • Foster a culture of excellence in teaching, research, and creative activities.
  • Embrace collaborative decision-making, shared governance, and academic freedom.
  • Manage departmental budgets, resources, and administrative functions.
  • Develop and implement dynamic philanthropic strategies with College Advancement.
  • Ensure departmental excellence in teaching, research, and service.
  • Align strategic planning and goal setting with college/school and university efforts.
  • Oversee faculty and staff development, including recruitment, retention, evaluation, and promotion.
  • Develop and manage the curriculum.
  • Communicate effectively with faculty and administration.
  • Enforce regulatory policies.
  • Maintain collegiality and shared governance.
  • Address questions, complaints, grievances, and suggestions from faculty, staff, and students.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the dean.

Required Qualifications

  • Terminal degree in any discipline offered by the department.
  • Academic credentials qualifying for tenure and rank of full professor. Associate professors nearing promotion will also be considered.
  • Nationally recognized record of scholarly and/or creative achievement.
  • Demonstrated commitment to teaching excellence.
  • Proven ability in building trust through collaborative decision-making, embracing shared governance, and integrating with the community.
  • Willingness to develop and engage in philanthropic fundraising.
  • Experience in leading within a higher education environment, supporting faculty, staff, and students.
  • Demonstrated experience in academic assessment.

Additional Information
The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.

This position is security-sensitive and subject to Texas Education Code Section 51.215, which authorizes the employer to obtain criminal history record information. Applicants selected must be able to show proof of eligibility to work in the United States by time of hire.
