The Media Department in the McAnulty College and Graduate School of Liberal Arts at Duquesne University is seeking collegial candidates for a nine-month, tenure-track Assistant Professor of Media position to begin in August 2026.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

The primary responsibility of the position will be teaching a range of courses pertaining to Media and Public Relations, including specialized graduate and advanced undergraduate courses in the candidate’s field of interest, upper-division courses in PR strategies, PR campaigns, media research methods, media and sports, and social media marketing, and lower-division courses in Public Relations and PR writing. Candidates with backgrounds in sports information/sports communication; big data analytics; nonprofit PR; and special events planning are of particular interest. All applicants will have the opportunity to teach and work with M.F.A. students. In addition to teaching, high-quality scholarly activity in the areas of the candidate’s active research agenda will be required. Mentorship of undergraduate and graduate students and student organizations will also be expected.

Our Department:

The Media Department is among the largest in the McAnulty College and Graduate School of Liberal Arts and prepares students to become thoughtful, effective and civic-minded media professionals across a wide range of media disciplines. The department offers majors in Multiplatform Journalism, Strategic Public Relations and Advertising, Sports Information and Media, and Digital Media Arts, with six tenured, tenure-track or equivalent faculty serving 245 students. The department also offers an M.F.A. degree in Media Arts and Technology. The department is academically rigorous and intellectually diverse. Its faculty meld professional experience in their respective media fields, theoretical knowledge and scholarship, and a commitment to teaching that enables students to cultivate a wide range of skills and knowledge. Our alumni include a recent Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and occupy prominent positions at NPR, Edelman Worldwide, UPMC, PNC Bank, the Pittsburgh Pirates and Penguins, and a host of other major media enterprises.

Qualifications:

An earned terminal degree (e.g., Ph.D., M.F.A., Ed.D.) in communication, media communication, advertising/public relations, strategic communication or another related academic field is preferred. Completion of the degree is required for appointment at the level of Assistant Professor. Candidates should also have professional experience in the field of public relations, advertising or marketing.

Therefore, candidates should demonstrate effectiveness and potential for excellence in teaching and scholarship in their application materials, including their ability to teach in higher education, and publish in prestigious academic journals.

Alternately, the applicants may possess any equivalent combination of experience and training, which provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the essential job functions.
