THE DEPARTMENT OF KINESIOLOGY
The Department of Kinesiology (https://www.utep.edu/chs/kinesiology/) has a history of excellence in interdisciplinary research, teaching, and community service. The Department offers a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science in Kinesiology and students can earn a Ph.D. through the Interdisciplinary Health Sciences Doctoral Program (IHS-Ph.D.). Kinesiology faculty serve as major advisors for doctoral students in the IHS-Ph.D. program and doctoral students conduct research in the faculty member’s area of expertise. Current enrollment in Kinesiology exceeds 800 undergraduate students, with about 30 Master’s degree and Ph.D. students. Faculty have successfully secured external funding for and currently conduct research in sport performance, biomechanics, motor control, obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. Faculty members in the Department collaborate with the UTEP Doctor of Physical Therapy Program, Biology Department, College of Engineering, local community partners, hospitals, Texas Tech University Health Science Center El Paso and national and international universities. The Department offers more than ten teaching assistantships for qualified graduate students. Separately, the IHS-Ph.D. provides assistantships for qualified Ph.D. students that allow them to focus solely on research.
The Department of Kinesiology has research laboratories related to Exercise Physiology, Biomechanics, Motor Control, and Environmental Physiology. All laboratories contain state-of-the-art equipment to support clinical and basic science research led by the faculty.
THE COLLEGE OF HEALTH SCIENCES
The UTEP College of Health Sciences prepares the next generation of health and human service professionals to improve quality of life and address health disparities in their communities. The College offers five undergraduate degrees in Clinical Lab Science, Health Promotion, Rehabilitation Sciences, Social Work and Kinesiology. There are five master’s degrees in the college: Speech-Language Pathology, Occupational Therapy (transitioning to OTD by 2022), Public Health, Social Work, and Kinesiology. There are currently two doctoral programs in CHS: Doctor of Physical Therapy, and a Ph.D. in Interdisciplinary Health Sciences. High impact educational experiences enable students to develop leadership, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills, as well as a strong sense of social responsibility through community and global engagement opportunities.
Faculty and students engage in teaching, research, and service incorporating Boyer’s Model of the scholarship of discovery, integration, application/engagement, and teaching and learning, all related to the applied health sciences (https://www.utep.edu/chs/). The College’s facilities and programs are designed to promote interprofessional teaching, learning, research and community & global engagement initiatives. The College of Health Sciences enjoys a strong and collaborative relationship with a range of local, national and global community partners. Graduate and undergraduate students participate actively with clinical and research faculty mentors in conducting a variety of projects relevant to addressing health inequities and improving quality of life in the Paso del Norte region and beyond.
Job Description:
The University of Texas at El Paso invites application for a full-time Assistant/Associate/Full Professor position in the Department of Kinesiology in the College of Health Sciences. The position is a tenure-track/tenured, nine-month academic year position with the possibility of summer teaching. The successful candidate will teach undergraduate and graduate courses related to kinesiology, mentor master’s and doctoral students, engage in scholarly research, which includes publishing research and applying for external funding; and participate in service activities within the department, college, university, and profession. The anticipated appointment date is Fall 2026.
Requirements:
- an earned doctorate degree in Kinesiology or a closely related area, with a focus around strength and conditioning or human fitness and performance.
- a strong record of academic scholarship, as demonstrated by research publications, and have secured or be developing substantial extramural research funding.
- a commitment to and potential for teaching excellence, or a record of successful college or university teaching; and
- potential for, or history of active service participation and/or leadership roles in campus, community, or professional organizations. The successful candidate must be able to work effectively with faculty, staff, and students from diverse ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Preference will be given to candidates with previous experience and interest in conducting translational and collaborative research in the areas surrounding strength and conditioning or human fitness and performance, demonstrated record of, or strong potential of securing external funding, and postdoctoral research training.
