Job description
POSITION AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources at the University of Georgia in Athens, GA invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position in applied aquaculture and/or fish health at the Assistant or Associate Professor level with outreach, instruction, research, and university and professional service expectations as part of a 9-month appointment. Successful candidates will be expected to establish interdisciplinary collaborations in outreach, teaching, and research with faculty in the Warnell School and across campus. Individuals with expertise in the following academic areas relative to applied aquaculture are encouraged to apply: aquatic animal health, commercial aquaculture production, sustainable aquaculture systems, or a closely related discipline.
Outreach responsibilities (30%) should be satisfied by developing educational activities and programs (a series of related activities building to develop competencies) which address the needs of stakeholders (e.g., state and federal agencies, aquatic industry professionals, county extension personnel) in Georgia and beyond. Excellence in Outreach programming should involve using creative and innovative delivery strategies (face-to-face, online, video-based, Podcasts, etc.) for reaching groups, along with individual, one-on-one consultations for technical assistance.
Applied research responsibilities (30%) include development of an externally funded, nationally/internationally recognized program in the areas of Aquaculture and Aquatic Animal Health. The successful candidate will interact with and advise private landowners, industry professionals, state and federal agencies, and Extension professionals. To fulfill the teaching appointment (35%), the successful candidate will advise undergraduate and graduate students and teach two courses per academic year; one course in Aquaculture and one course in an area of the candidate’s expertise (e.g., aquatic/fish disease). The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the Warnell School’s online Master of Natural Resources degree (launching in 2026). The successful candidate will also be expected to engage in professional service (5%), such as serving on School/University committees and actively participating in professional/scientific societies.
QUALIFICATIONS: Required.— Candidates must possess a Ph.D. with an emphasis on aquatic animal health, commercial aquaculture production, sustainable aquaculture systems, or a closely related discipline. Candidates must demonstrate clear evidence of scholarship through peer-reviewed publications and/or technical publications, and the ability to attract extramural funding. The successful candidate will demonstrate potential for outreach productivity and should have interest in: extension education; conducting and reporting applied research; and non-traditional or online instruction. The person must also demonstrate potential and willingness to work closely with public and private partners, Extension professionals, and other constituent groups, and be able to successfully mentor students. Preferred.— Candidates who have the potential to use modern, innovative extension/outreach tools. Candidates who can integrate science and stakeholder values into their research program. Candidates whose applied research affects industrial aquaculture at large spatial scales.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS: Appointment to Associate Professor requires a record consistent with promotion to Associate Professor at the Warnell School such as strong evidence of emerging stature as a regional/national authority, acquiring and administering external funding, ability to produce and communicate research, and excellence in teaching and working with students. Service at the Associate Professor level for 1-2 years is preferred for this rank.
