Job Summary
The Landscape Architecture Program in the College of Architecture, Planning and Public Affairs (CAPPA), at the University of Texas at Arlington, invites applications for the Rank of Assistant Professor (Tenure-Track) with a focus on landscape ecology, plant identification and planting design, landscape construction and technologies, and sustainability and resilience in landscape architecture. This position is an academic year (9-month) appointment. The successful candidate will primarily teach in the Master’s in Landscape Architecture Program, with responsibilities to support its Bachelor of Science in Sustainable Urban Design (BSSUD) program. The successful candidate is also expected to chair graduate student’s committee and pursue external (federal, state or local) grant opportunities. While the UTA Master’s in Landscape Architecture (MLA) program focuses on ecological and environmental resiliency, urban placemaking, and quality of life, the BSSUD program prepares graduates for careers where students can contribute to creating cities and urban spaces that are resilient, inclusive, and environmentally sustainable by taking advantage of its locational advantages in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metropolitan Region (DFW).

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The Landscape Architecture Program, which house the Master of Landscape Architecture (MLA) and the Bachelor of Science in Sustainable Urban Design (BSSUD) programs, invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor, beginning in Fall 2026. The successful candidate will primarily teach in the MLA Program, with additional responsibilities supporting the BSSUD Program.
This is a tenure-track position with responsibilities in teaching, research, and service. The successful candidate will teach studio, core, and elective courses, as well as advise on the thesis. There will also be opportunities to contribute to the BSSUD program by serving as a capstone advisor and teaching core or elective courses. Applicants should demonstrate a strong and current specialization in landscape architecture, specifically in landscape ecology, plant identification, and planting design, as well as landscape construction materials, methods, technologies, and sustainability and resilience.
The anticipated teaching load is at least nine credit hours per semester, typically consisting of a design studio and a core, elective, or seminar course. Additional responsibilities include participation in thesis committees and BSSUD capstone reviews. Specific teaching assignments will be determined based on the candidate’s background, experience, and qualifications. In alignment with UTA’s designation as a Carnegie R1 research university, a portion of the workload will be dedicated to research and/or creative activities, in addition to teaching and service within the candidate’s area of expertise.
Required Qualifications
- Applicants must have a terminal landscape architecture degree from an LAAB-accredited institution (MLA).
- Applicants must have earned a Ph.D. degree in landscape architecture or related disciplines. Applicants who are still pursuing a Ph.D. degree must have completed it by the time of the hiring.
- Applicants should have a record of excellence in teaching, research, creative works, or professional practice in landscape architecture.
- Applicants must demonstrate an inspiring teaching, research/creative activity, and service agenda to primarily serve at the graduate level.
- Applicants must demonstrate strong skills and knowledge for teaching and research/creative activity in at least three of the following areas:
- Plant Identification & Planting Design
- Landscape Construction Materials, Methods, and Technologies
- Landscape Ecology, Biodiversity, & Nature-Based Solutions
- Landscape Resilience, Climate Action, and Sustainability
Preferred Qualifications
In addition to the required qualification, applicants with the following conditions are strongly encouraged to apply:
- Professional licensure and/or significant and current professional experience in landscape architecture, or related fields.
- Evidence of exceptional research or professional practice work and strong communication skills.
- Experience with community outreach and engagement and its incorporation into research, teaching, and service.
Department Information
The UTA Landscape Architecture Program houses the MLA and the BSSUD Programs. The MLA program focuses on ecological and environmental resiliency, urban placemaking, and quality of life by leveraging its unique location. The Dallas-Arlington-Fort Worth Metropolitan Region (DFW) offers exceptional opportunities for students and professionals to develop practical solutions to the challenges within the most rapidly expanding urban area in the United States. The program promotes leading-edge design and planning within a transferable urban lab environment in DFW through interdisciplinary teaching, research, and community engagement. Additional learning opportunities are offered for working professionals beyond the MLA, including continuing education, certificates, and executive programs.
Established through the Unite Effectiveness Process (UEP), the process supports the program’s mission and is also aligned with the standards established by the Landscape Architecture Accreditation Board (LAAB) for first professional degree programs in landscape architecture that encompass the body of knowledge common to the profession and promote the acquisition of the knowledge and skills necessary to enter professional practice.
The following educational goals and objectives guide landscape architecture curriculum and long-range planning: Proficiency in communication, Proficiency in verbal communication, Identification of natural and cultural systems, Knowledge of computer applications, Knowledge of construction materials, methods, technologies, and applications, Advanced written research/communication, and Design comprehension, creativity, and rigor.
The BSSUD program prepares undergraduates for careers where students can contribute to creating cities and urban spaces that are resilient, inclusive, and environmentally sustainable. It equips students with the knowledge and skills needed to tackle complex urban challenges in the 21st century. It is a four-year program that offers an innovative curriculum, preparing students for the rapidly growing interdisciplinary field of sustainable urban design. The program comprises approximately 120 credit hours, including 18 prescribed electives from over a dozen disciplines.
CAPPA houses Landscape Architecture Programs, the School of Architecture, and the Department of Public Affairs and Planning. While Landscape Architecture Programs offer dedicated lab spaces where faculty and students can explore and test innovative pedagogy, research, or creative scholarship, CAPPA provides numerous resources for faculty. CAPPA institutes and centers have forged multiple partnerships through its centers, labs and locations throughout the DFW Metropolitan area, including the Arlington Urban Design Center (AUDC), Center for Metropolitan Density (CFMD), Center for Transportation, Equity, Decisions and Dollars (CTEDD), David Dillon Center for Texas Architecture (DDC), and Institute of Urban Studies (IUS). CAPPA also has numerous technical labs, including Digital Fabrication, Metal Fabrication, Prototype Assembly, Wood Fabrication, and UTA Community Design Build. Additionally, UTA Fort Worth and the UTA Research Institute (UTARI) offer valuable resources for pursuing creative and innovative projects. These locations, centers, and labs can potentially support the candidates’ critical educational research and creative works agenda.
