Job description

The Department of Communication and Social Cultural-Sciences at the University of Houston-Clear Lake invites applications for a Lecturer (full-time, non-tenure track, 4-4 teaching load fall/spring) position in the Sociology Program. The successful candidate is expected to teach fundamental sociology classes such as Intro to Sociology and Social Structure, as well as other core sociology courses at the undergraduate level. An expertise in Medical Sociology is preferred, and a demonstrated record of teaching excellence is required.

The candidate will engage in service to the program, college, university, profession, and/or community in a manner that will contribute to the development and growth of the Sociology Program.

Candidates will have the opportunity to teach in UHCL’s Prison Education Program, Transforming Lives by Degrees (TLD). TLD operates at Ramsey Prison in Rosharon, Texas. Students in the program can earn a BS in Behavioral Sciences (Sociology is one of the concentrations for this degree), a BA in Humanities, or a MA in Humanities. Preference will also be given to candidates who have prior experience teaching in a prison education program, or who have interest teaching in TLD.

Duties:

  • Teach Intro to Sociology, Social Structure, and core Sociology courses
  • Participate in college activities and serve on program or college committees

Required Qualifications:

  • A Master of Arts in Sociology from an accredited university
  • Successful university teaching experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A PhD in Sociology from an accredited university
  • A specialization in Medical Sociology
  • Experience teaching in a prison education program and/or demonstrated interest in teaching in a prison education program
