Helena College University of Montana, a comprehensive two-year college, invites applications for a Diesel Mechanics Instructor. We are seeking a skilled diesel technician or an experienced instructor with a diesel background who is ready to inspire and train the next generation of diesel mechanics as part of a collaborative team dedicated to student success.

Examples of Duties and Responsibilities

This is a full-time Diesel Mechanics Instructor position within the Career Technical Education division. Helena College Instructors are professional educators with the primary responsibility of providing a quality education for all Helena College students. Teaching experience is not required, but a strong desire to teach and inspire students is essential.
The instructor will teach Diesel Technology classes, responsible for teaching 30-32 credits each academic year.

This position reports to the Executive Director of Career Technical Education and Dual Enrollment and will be responsible for:

  • Teaching in the classroom and lab/shop.
    • Creating effective lessons and evaluating student learning.
    • Preparing for classes and identifying the equipment and supplies needed to effectively teach students.
    • Enforcing and modeling safe practices.
    • Managing shop/lab space as well as college-owned equipment.
    • Pursuing professional development opportunities to grow and develop as a teacher.
    • Maintaining a schedule that allows students to ask questions and seek help by providing availability before and after scheduled class time.
    • Participating in college activities and required faculty meetings.
    • Performing other related professional duties as assigned by the Executive Director of Career Technical Education and Dual Enrollment.

    Minimum Qualifications

    • 5-10 years recent experience working as a diesel mechanic; or a 2 or 4-year degree in Diesel Mechanics; or an equivalent combination of education and experience as determined by the hiring authority.
      • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
        • Ability to plan, develop, implement, evaluate/assess, and continuously improve instruction.
        • Ability to use various teaching methods to enhance student learning, including lectures, group discussions, hands-on activities, demonstrations, and individual tasks.
        • Ability to use teaching methods that best serve individual students’ needs, interests, and learning styles.
        • Willingness to collaborate with faculty and other stakeholders on program and curriculum development.
        • Commitment to Helena College mission, vision, and strategic goals.
        • Ability to build constructive working relationships based on acceptance, cooperation, and mutual respect.
        • Adherence to all Helena College and Montana University System policies and procedures.

        Preferred Qualifications

        • Previous teaching experience.
          • Experience using technology in the workplace/classroom.
          • Familiarity with current issues and trends in higher education, specifically in two-year education.

          Work Schedule: August 2026, Full time Academic Year position (10 months).
