LOCATION

Palo Verde College is located in the City of Blythe at one of the busiest entrance points to California. The college is located in a desert oasis adjacent to the beautiful Colorado River and the Palo Verde Valley. Blythe, and the fertile Palo Verde Valley, is primarily a farming and ranching area. Boating, fishing and hunting attract many tourists. The Palo Verde Valley is centrally located between Phoenix and Los Angeles, Las Vegas and the Mexican border. The valley’s great climate, with more than 350 days of sunshine and mild winters, attracts thousands of winter visitors every year.

NATURE OF THE POSITION
The Nursing Program Director is an Educational Administrator, under the direction of the Associate Dean Of Nursing & Allied Health. The Director serves as the first-line administrator and program planner for a variety of instructional and learning support services related to the College’s Nursing Education Department. Develop, plan, coordinate and direct the activities and operations of the Registered Nursing and Allied Programs; oversee and participate in nursing curriculum development, monitoring and review assigned personnel. Responsibilities include budget development and management. The Director is responsible for advancing the College’s mission, implementing College policies, and assuring compliance with all applicable accreditation requirements, education codes, and state/Federal laws.

Examples of Duties

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Collaborate with the staff and faculty for the development, organization and operation of the nursing program. Work for the improvement of the nursing program through study, analysis and planning. Work with the faculty in the development and consistent implementation of program policies for faculty and students.
2. Maintain the Registered Nursing Program accreditation, including the submission of required documents for Board of Registered Nursing (B.R.N.) and any accrediting body. Provide leadership in the process of accreditation and the preparation of reports for accreditation/approval visits, program review process, and annual reports to licensing agencies.
3. Develop and Implement curricula in order to prepare students adequately for the challenges presented within all aspects of the nursing field.
4. Arrange for the use of off-site facilities for clinical instruction. Negotiate, administer and supervise compliance with contractual agreement with agencies used for student clinical placements.
5. Maintain contractual relationships and obligations with local health organizations.
6. Provide leadership in curriculum development and improvement, regular review, evaluation and revision for currency and relevance.
7. Review instructional programs for compliance with applicable state and federal law, regulations and guidelines, District policy and procedure, BRN rules, and responsiveness to the needs of the local community.
8. Provide leadership in promoting nursing programs and recruiting a qualified pool of student applicants. Implement student selection and admission policies and procedures.
9. Enforce student discipline, maintain related records; provide direction to students regarding licensure examination; develop studies tracking student program graduates, analyze results, and implement program modifications to improve performance.
10. Prepare, submit, and administer a timely and accurate department budget.
11. Recommend the purchase of supplies and equipment for the nursing program.
12. Serve as a mediator in problems involving Assistant Director, faculty, staff, and students.
13. Promote collaboration with other schools of nursing and the health care community in the development of partnerships. Promote, publicize and represent the Registered Nursing program.
Call, attend and preside at nursing advisory committee meetings.
14. Facilitate faculty, staff and student acquisition of new technologies in the classroom and workplace.
15. Call meetings of the nursing staff as needed. Serve as a liaison with the Assistant Director between nursing faculty and the administration.
16. Attend and participate in professional conferences and meetings.
17. Assist faculty in planning and organizing in-service educational programs.
18. Perform other duties assigned.

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES
KNOWLEDGE OF: California State Board of Nursing regulations; National League for Nursing accreditation standards; California State Board of Vocational Nursing regulations; current nursing educational trends; diverse nursing career pathways; relevant California Education Code and Title V regulations; healthcare industry trends and needs; and policies and procedures appropriate to the administration of nursing programs within a community college setting.
ABILITY TO: Advise students with diverse academic backgrounds; implement, monitor and evaluate program compliance with state, regional and/or national regulations and/or standards; establish and maintain effective and harmonious working relationships with a diverse population of students, staff and community; communicate effectively both orally and in writing; implement and modify curricula in response to changing health care needs to maintain effective programs; and serve as an effective leadership team member.

Educational/Experience Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
1. Possession of a Master’s or higher degree from an accredited college or university in nursing, education or administration.
2. One year experience in an administrative position.
3. Two years’ experience teaching in pre- or post-licensure nursing programs.
4. One year experience as a registered nurse providing direct patient care and/or the equivalent as determined by the Board of Registered Nursing.
5. Hold or be eligible for California State licensure as a Registered Nurse.
6. Sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.

LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS
1. Valid and Active California license as a Registered Nurse.
2. Valid California driver’s license.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
1. Ph.D. in Nursing Education from an accredited college or university.
2. Progressively responsible administrative experience in an accredited institution of higher education, preferably in a community college.
