Position Description

The Theology Department invites candidates to apply for a two-year contract as a full-time Affiliate Instructor (start date: August 2026). Eastern University is a nationally recognized Christian university enrolling over 7,000 students in a wide array of undergraduate, graduate, professional, and seminary programs. The university’s principal campus is located in St. Davids, Pennsylvania with some programs also offered online. The Affiliate Instructor of Biblical Studies is a two-year contract in the Department of Theology within the College of Arts and Humanities. We seek a teacher-scholar who is passionate about helping students engage scripture deeply and faithfully, integrating rigorous academic study with a commitment to the Christian faith. The successful candidate’s primary responsibilities will involve teaching traditional (in person) required general education courses (BIBL 100 Introducing Biblical Literature and THEO 110 Christian Spirituality) at the undergraduate level. The successful candidate may also be asked to teach these introductory courses online or in person upper-level seminars in biblical studies based on demand.

Candidates for this position should be enthusiastic supporters of Eastern University’s General Education program and able to deliver biblical and theological studies courses to diverse, undergraduate audiences.

Position Responsibilities

The successful candidate will:

  • Teach a full course load (typically 24 credits per academic year) for the Theology Department with BIBL 100 and THEO 110 being the primary teaching assignments as part of the university’s general education program (with sections offered on-ground and online).
  • Contribute enthusiastically to the work of the department including student mentoring and recruitment activities.
  • Remain competent and conversant with recent pedagogy, including the impact of A.I. on teaching and learning in academic courses.
  • Serve as a faculty advisor for assigned students, assisting in mentoring and oversight of advisees’ progression toward degree completion.
  • Undertake all service requirements required of an affiliate faculty member. This includes attendance at faculty, departmental, and college meetings and participation in graduation ceremonies.
  • Provide support for Eastern University’s commitment to faith, reason, and justice.

Qualifications

  • Applicants should possess or be working toward an advanced degree (Masters, Ph.D., or equivalent)
  • Applicants should exhibit evidence of outstanding teaching and a passion for undergraduate pedagogy.
  • Applicants should demonstrate excellence in teaching diverse student populations across the academic spectrum (both academically gifted and developmental students).
  • Applicants should be adept in teaching on-ground and online courses.
  • Applicants should possess proficiency (or ability and willingness to acquire proficiency) in online learning tools and software platforms.
  • Applicants must be able to sign Eastern University’s doctrinal statement, be an active member of a Christian church, and be pursuing a robust life of faith.

Results must be submitted within ten days of receipt.
