Advertised Job Summary
The University of South Carolina Beaufort seeks a bold, student centered Provost & Executive Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs to energize a dynamic academic community across USCB’s campuses and serve as the university’s chief academic officer. Reporting to the Chancellor and serving as a key member of the Chancellor’s Cabinet, the Provost provides strategic, administrative, and intellectual leadership for all academic programs and units, oversees Libraries, Institutional Effectiveness and Research, grants and sponsored programs, eLearning, the Center for Teaching and Learning, academic centers and institutes including the Sea Islands Institute, Beaufort College Honors, Pritchard’s Island, and other academic support services.
The Provost champions faculty excellence and shared governance, recruits and develops outstanding faculty and academic leaders, evaluates department chairs and Academic Affairs personnel, and recommends promotion, tenure, and salary actions to the Chancellor. The Provost drives university wide strategic and academic planning, assessment, accreditation, and program approvals, advances high impact educational practices that deepen student learning and success, and expands the university’s research capacity through strong external partnerships.
Job Purpose
Reporting directly to the Chancellor, the Provost & Executive Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs serves as the chief academic officer and provides strategic, administrative, and intellectual leadership for all academic programs and units. The Provost is a key member of the Chancellor’s Cabinet, provides leadership in shared governance, institutional planning, accreditation, and external engagement, and represents the Chancellor when appropriate.
Job Duties
Academic Leadership, Faculty Affairs, and Operations
* Provide executive leadership for all academic units, programs, and instructional operations across multiple campuses.
* Oversee libraries, Institutional Effectiveness and Research, eLearning, the Center for Teaching and Learning, academic centers and institutes including Beaufort College Honors, two branch campuses, and other academic support services.
* Ensure academic excellence, curriculum integrity, faculty development, and student success across the institution.
* Lead the administrative organization of the faculty; recruit and retain qualified faculty; evaluate department chairs and other Academic Affairs personnel; recommend promotion, tenure, and salary actions to the Chancellor; and support faculty governance in alignment with the Faculty Manual.
* Exercise supervisory and budgetary authority over Academic Affairs; align financial planning with institutional priorities and enrollment trends; and ensure effective, mission aligned organizational structures. Work with the Academic Affairs Council to set academic funding priorities and make funding recommendations to the Chancellor and the Chancellor’s Cabinet.
Strategy, Planning, and Accreditation
* Lead the development, implementation, and assessment of university wide strategic and academic plans.
* Advance high impact educational practices including experiential learning, undergraduate research, internships, study abroad, and community-based learning.
* Guide the planning, implementation, and evaluation of new academic programs and initiatives that respond to student demand and regional workforce needs; and oversee academic planning for new campuses and facilities.
* Coordinate academic program reviews; secure internal and external program approvals; and oversee institutional and program accreditation in alignment with system and regional standards.
Research and Sponsored Programs
* Provide strategic leadership for research, scholarly, and creative activity aligned with USCB’s mission as a teaching-centered, regionally engaged university.
* Foster a culture of inquiry that integrates faculty scholarship, undergraduate research, experiential learning, and community-engaged initiatives.
* Lead institutional strategies to expand external funding, interdisciplinary collaboration, research productivity, and partnerships with federal and state agencies, industry, and community organizations to advance applied and place-based research.
* Support faculty success through grant and research administration, mentoring, and policies that recognize diverse forms of scholarship.
* Provide academic and strategic oversight of research centers, institutes, and field programs, including the Sea Islands Institute and Pritchard’s Island Research Program, to expand funded research and field-based learning opportunities.
Other Duties as assigned
Supervisory Responsibilities
Supervise department chairs; Institutional Effectiveness and Research; Libraries; the Sea Islands Institute; Grants; the Honors Program; Pritchard’s Island; and other academic support services and activities. Also supervise the Director of the Water Quality Lab and designated administrative staff.

Required Education and Experience
* An earned doctorate or appropriate terminal degree from an accredited institution.
* A record of effective full-time teaching, service, and scholarly activities to qualify as a tenured professor in an academic discipline.
* Evidence of progressively responsible and successful academic leadership at dean’s level or above, preferably at the Provost/Chief Academic Officer level.
* Experience with regional (SACSCOC) and program-specific accreditation processes.
* Deep understanding of higher education trends, regional workforce needs, and the ability to build innovative undergraduate and graduate programs that drive enrollment and meet current and future demands.
* Experience in fiscal and personnel management at a high level.
