The A. Max Weitzenhoffer School of Musical Theatre (SOMT) at the University of Oklahoma invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track position at the Assistant or Associate level for Musical Theatre Dance. Appointment will begin August 16, 2025. We seek a musical theatre dance teacher who is a collaborative educator and practitioner that serves as a multidisciplinary visionary to our diverse student body. This artist should be a skilled dance pedagogue, an innovative teacher, and a colleague ready to mentor our students to lead a 21st century theatre industry.

The candidate must possess specific skills in dance, musical theatre performance, and choreography that provide students the tools to take technical dancing and create dynamic, exciting, and unique musical theatre artists. They should be an experienced choreographer of musicals with an active professional career and wealth of connections. Every student in the SOMT will study with this faculty member.

This position contributes to the creative/research activity of the SOMT and the Weitzenhoffer Family College of Fine Arts at OU. As a choreographer and possible director, they lead annual University Theatre musical productions and work collaboratively with student, faculty, and guest designers from the Helmerich School of Drama design/production area.

Additionally, this faculty member will provide service to the School, College, and University not only artistically and through creative activity/research, but in the areas of recruitment; a major undertaking in the highly selective School of Musical Theatre, and committee service. The areas of annual evaluation include teaching, research/creative activity, and service.

Responsibilities:

  • Teach all levels of musical theatre courses in musical theatre tap, jazz, and theatre dance styles.
  • Serve as the coordinator of the entire dance area within the Weitzenhoffer School of Musical Theatre.
  • Choreograph productions for the School of Musical Theatre in the University Theatre and Downtown Series season.
  • Contribute to advising and recruitment of undergraduate students.
  • Maintain an active research/creative activity profile at the regional level.
  • Provide service to the department, college, university, and profession.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in dance or theatre performance.
  • Demonstrated ability teaching musical theatre dance, such as tap, jazz, and theatre styles.
  • Demonstrated experience choreographing musicals.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in dance, directing, choreography, or theatre performance.
  • Demonstrated ability teaching musical theatre dance at the collegiate level for at least three years.
  • Demonstrated experience choreographing musicals at a national level.
  • Demonstrated experience directing musicals at the collegiate or regional level.
  • Active membership in a professional performance union (AEA, SAG – AFTRA, SDC, AGVA, AGMA).
