Job Summary

Xavier University of Louisiana, a Catholic and Historically Black University, is seeking to hire a tenure-track, full-time assistant professor of English, specializing in Global Anglophone literatures, with the appointment to begin August 2025. Preferred candidates will demonstrate strength in the literature of the African diaspora, and readiness to contribute to interdisciplinary programming in Women’s Studies and the Department of African American and Diaspora Studies. Qualified candidates should have a Ph.D. by time of appointment, and possess a promising record of scholarship, and a strong research agenda. The position offers the opportunity to develop and teach upper-level undergraduate courses within the candidate’s area(s) of specialization. The position includes the opportunity to teach and work within a diverse faculty and student body, in an historic, mission-driven institution in the unique city of New Orleans. The teaching load is 4/4.

Duties:

  • Teach undergraduate courses in global Anglophone literatures at a variety of levels (sophomore surveys and upper-level genre, period, and/or single-author courses); teach courses on postcolonial literature and composition courses (college writing; rhetoric; literature).
  • Advise students in the English major.
  • Participate in curriculum and course development and revision/updates to the English department’s curriculum.
  • Develop and sustain an independent research agenda.
  • Participation in student recruiting.
  • Participate in service activities for the department, university, and scholarly community.
  • Participate in on-campus department, college, and university meetings and assemblies, as well as university convocations and graduation.

The Department of English recognizes writing as an act of justice and partners with students through mentorship and dialogue to promote marginalized and silenced voices. The Department of English offers bachelor’s degrees in English and English Education, as well as minors in English, Creative Writing, Professional Writing, and Digital Humanities. English also houses an annual, undergraduate journal of creative writing, New Voices, and Xavier Review Press, which publishes two books per year on the arts and humanities, as well as Xavier Review, one of the longest-running literary journals in the region: www.xavierreview.comXRP has special interests in the American South, New Orleans, the Gulf and Caribbean sphere, and African American culture, ethnography, and religion. Minimum Qualifications

  • Ph.D. with a focus on Global Anglophone Literatures (conferred by the time of appointment).
  • Strong commitment to teaching 4-4 teaching load.
  • Demonstrate a strong potential for excellence in teaching and mentoring undergraduate students.
  • Demonstrate ability and willingness to work collegially.
  • Demonstrated commitment to working successfully with a diverse student population.
  • Write and Speak English proficiently.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to convey complex concepts to diverse audiences.
  • Commitment to the mission of Xavier University of Louisiana.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced training beyond the Ph.D., e.g. Post-doc, industry, etc.
  • Experience with teaching, as well as a strong publication record in global Anglophone literatures (i.e. ; African diaspora, Women’s Studies).
  • Commitment to working successfully with a diverse student population.
  • Established track record of meaningful mentorship of undergraduate students.
  • Experience teaching to a diverse student body and knowledge of effective strategies (e.g. culturally responsive or inclusive pedagogy, awareness of issues that may affect the success of minoritized students) supporting underrepresented groups.
  • Demonstrable understanding of HBCU history and culture.

Founded in 1925 by Saint Katharine Drexel and the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament, Xavier University of Louisiana is the only Catholic Historically Black College and University (HBCU).
