POSITION DESCRIPTION:
The School of Education, Leadership, Health and Humanities at Southern Oregon University (SOU) is seeking candidates for a full-time, nine month, professional-track, Instructor of Education.
Teaching responsibilities include teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in education. Teaching responsibilities may include online courses, hybrid courses, evening and weekend courses.
The department’s programs prepare students for graduate studies or for work in education settings that include early childhood education settings, public and private K-12 schools as well as adult education and education taking place outside of school settings.
The ideal candidate will demonstrate passion, experience, and expertise in education, early literacy, child/adolescent development, curriculum planning and instructional methods.
Teaching assignments may include courses in curriculum and assessment, historical and social foundations of education, classroom management, child and adolescent development, instructional methods, social-emotional learning, research literacy, literacy, differentiation of instruction, Universal Design for Learning and other pedagogical topics. Other courses related to the candidate’s strengths may also be assigned. Additional responsibilities include student advising, field supervision of pre-service teachers, departmental service, project supervision, collaborative curriculum development, program assessment, and other responsibilities as assigned.

Southern Oregon University is a public liberal arts institution of approximately 4,000 undergraduate and 1,000 graduate students. The surrounding area is known for cultural offerings such as the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, the Ashland International Film Festival, and the Britt Music Festival. The region is noted for its unparalleled biodiversity and the university lies in close proximity to the Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument. The Rogue Valley is renowned for outdoor activities such as hiking, skiing, and biking.
Minimum Qualifications
- Initial appointment at the rank of Instructor requires a Master’s degree in Education or equivalent thereof.
- Demonstrated teaching potential.
- Candidates must have exceptional written and verbal skills as well as a desire to advise and mentor students outside of the classroom. The candidate should demonstrate competency in teaching and should have experience incorporating subject matter content into undergraduate or graduate level instruction curricula.
- Evidence of ability to collaborate and communicate effectively with university, public school partners and community.
- Two years teaching experience in public school settings
- Two years of experience teaching and/or supervising preservice teachers
Preferred Qualifications
- Terminal degree, or ABD in Education or related field
- Traditional and online teaching experience in a college or university setting in one or more areas listed above
- Five years teaching in public school settings
- Experience in undergraduate advising
- Preference will be given to candidates with significant experience teaching and supervising pre-service teachers, including students from diverse backgrounds.
- Preference will be given to candidates with experience teaching at multiple grade levels in public schools

(100%) The primary responsibilities of all faculty members are: teaching, professional development, and service.
- Teaching encompasses normal instructional activities beyond the teaching of assigned courses such as academic advising, working with students outside of class, posting and maintaining appropriate office hours, course and curriculum planning, etc.
- Professional Development includes maintaining currency in the discipline taught.
- Service includes program and institutional administrative, committee, and student support and retention activities

- Demonstrated ability to interpret and consistently apply a wide variety of complex policies and procedures where specific guidelines may not always exist

- Strong analytical and research skills; demonstrated ability to gather, evaluate, and to develop well-reasoned conclusions and recommendations

Physical Demand
- Regular teaching activities, including standing/sitting, lecturing, and using a computer.
Special Conditions
- Workload expectations are outlined in the Association for Professors, Southern Oregon University (APSOU) Collective Bargaining Agreement, Article 19.
- Teaching assignments may include First Year Experience, online and/or hybrid courses, Medford and Ashland campus classes, and day, evening, and weekend courses.
- Must be willing to travel and attend training programs off-site for occasional professional development.
- Must be able to work additional hours and adjust working hours to meet special jobs. May be called back periodically to perform work as needed on an emergency basis.
- Must be able to successfully pass a pre-employment background check.
- Under the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), this position classification is defined as exempt and is not subject to overtime regulations.
- The person holding this position is considered a “mandated reporter” under the Oregon Revised Statutes and is required to comply with the requirements set forth by the Oregon Department of Human Services.

These Tribes were displaced during rapid Euro-American colonization, the Gold Rush, and armed conflict between 1851 and 1856.
