Role: Surgical Director, Baylor College of Medicine Simulation Core
Summary
Baylor College of Medicine (BCM) is recognized as one of the nation’s premier academic health science centers and is known for excellence in education, research, healthcare, and community service. The Simulation Core at BCM is seeking a surgical director who is enthusiastic about simulation and ready to establish BCM as a world-class leader in simulation-based learning and research.
Job Purpose
The role of surgical director for the Simulation Core (BCM Sim Core) is to utilize a broad base of clinical knowledge and practical experience combined with simulation methodology to advance learning, operational effectiveness, and quality and safety reporting for the Simulation Core at Baylor College of Medicine. The Surgical Director will report to the Director of the Simulation Core and to the Senior Dean, School of Medicine and School of Health Professions, and oversee all aspects of undergraduate and graduate surgical curriculum development, simulation services, skills lab innovation and interprofessional education. The Director will work in close collaboration with a wide variety of stakeholders, including but not limited to education and academic department leaders and the Simulation Core team to manage overall goals and objectives to ensure alignment with the BCM mission, strategic priorities, accreditation, and regulatory requirements. The surgical director of the Simulation Core will also be responsible for the oversight of marketing and development initiatives, research and assessment efforts, and the systematic expansion and integration of simulation across the institution.
Job Qualifications
- MD ideally with training as surgeon and with relevant certificates in education and/or surgical simulation training
Job Duties
- 20-30% protected time dedicated to Sim Lab Surgical Director responsibilities, with remainder of time committed to clinical and/or funded research responsibilities.
- Work collaboratively to implement the overall vision and mission for the Simulation Core. This includes strategic planning as well as ongoing collaborations with internal and external stakeholders such as: academic departments, School of Medicine, School of Health Professions, Undergraduate and Graduate Medical Education, and the Baylor College of Medicine Temple Campus.
- Develop curriculum and plans for advancing simulation and technology in Undergraduate and Graduate Medical Education and work together with the Director of Undergraduate Medical Education.
- Supervise key faculty, professional and support staff assigned to simulation and technology functions. Oversee personnel activities, including, but not limited to, recruitment, employee selection, appraisals, and evaluation.
- Work with key stakeholders to attain and maintain relevant third party certifications, including that from the American College of Surgeons.
- Maintain proficiency in existing and emerging trends in the use of simulation and virtual reality in healthcare education including basic theory, design, and implementation, through networking, maintaining a literature base, evaluating new methods and materials, and participating in education opportunities.
- Actively participate in the national and international professional arena of simulation education through meetings, speaking opportunities, publications, and other collaborations to establish BCM status as a world-class leader in simulation-based learning and research.
- Assist educators and learners at all levels with skills development, providing remediation when required.
- Create, lead, and participate in learner orientations, training simulations, and assessment events.
- Build a faculty development program to orient faculty instructors to simulation methodology and the BCM Simulation Core.
- Oversee management of the Simulation Core physical plant, equipment, and programming.
- Provide teaching and evaluation of the residents for simulation and coordinate with the medical student directors to teach simulation.
- Assess and advance simulation and academic technology opportunities and align opportunities with faculty and program development.
- Develop and monitor annual operating and capital budgets, including forecasting the timing and cost for purchasing new equipment and technology.
- Collaborate with Development and Alumni Relations to identify funding opportunities and initiatives to support sustainability.
