Job Summary
East Tennessee State University (ETSU) is now accepting applications for the position of Clinical Instructor Theatre Costume Shop Supervisor. This is a 9-month appointment, reporting to the Chair of Theatre and Dance. This role involves overseeing all activities in the Theatre and Dance Costume Shop and managing costume, hair, and makeup for productions at the Bert C. Bach Theatre/Martin Center for the Arts and other university venues. You will supervise students, faculty, and staff in the daily operations of the ETSU Costume Shop learning laboratory, ensuring smooth and efficient processes.
Key responsibilities include overseeing costume creation-pulling, building, renting, and purchasing-administering actor fittings, designing costumes, hair, and makeup for productions, and attending production meetings and dress rehearsals. The position also involves maintaining budget records, enforcing safety protocols for equipment use, and ensuring a clean, safe, and organized working environment. Additionally, you will supervise student workers, mentor student costume designers, and manage donations in compliance with legal standards.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of industry standard production techniques with regard to costume design, costume construction, including draping, patterning and cutting, costume crafts, hair and makeup.
- Knowledge of industry standard theatrical production equipment; ability to safely and efficiently use and teach students to use all costume, makeup, and hair tools and equipment.
- Knowledge of general computer skills and programs, (MAC and PC) MS Office Word, Excel Spreadsheet, and pertinent wardrobe management, pattern drafting, and costume rendering software programs.
- Knowledge of budget processes and financial management principles found in theatrical production environments.
- Knowledge of safety guidelines (OSHA or TOSHA) and/or ability and willingness to learn rules and procedures.
- Ability to be flexible in setting work schedules, adaptability in work environment, and tolerance for working with widely diverse groups of students, performers, artists, technicians, and professional groups.
- Ability to periodically work flexible work hours as events may be scheduled during the day, in the evenings, or on weekends.
- Ability to be effectual in interpersonal, written and oral communication as well as the ability to express ideas clearly, concisely, and convincingly using effective negotiation skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
- Ability to cooperate and get along with supervisor and work well with co-workers, the university community, and the public.
- Ability to effectively supervise and coordinate the work of others. Ability to maintain an accurate inventory of equipment.
- Ability to ensure a safe theatre environment for students, faculty, staff, and the public.Ability to effectively prepare costumes, hair, makeup and set up the spaces required for these aspects for all performances. Ability to carry out functions relating to these aspects during performance and reset for subsequent performances efficiently and effectively.
- Ability to demonstrate time management, multitasking, and organizational skills for planning, scheduling, and record-keeping; ability to effectively prioritize assignments and projects.
Physical Demands:
- Ability to perform occasional heavy lifting as required by costume production.
Required Qualifications
- A Bachelor of Arts in Theatre, Costume Design, or a related field.
- 2 years of work experience in costume, hair, and makeup productions.
- 2 years of experience in costume shop management.
Preferred Qualifications
- MFA in Theatre (Costume related field)
