Basic Function and Scope of Responsibilities:
The Brooklyn Campus Library at Long Island University seeks an enthusiastic, user-oriented individual to support students and faculty through reference services and consultations, curriculum-integrated library instruction, and collection development activities. The successful candidate for the Health Sciences Librarian position will have experience with general and specialized information resources to support the teaching, learning and research activities of the faculty and students of the health professions, as well as of the campus and university. This is a tenure-track faculty position that requires academic librarianship, research, publication, and service to the university and the profession. Long Island University is currently classified as an R2 research university (Doctoral University-High Research Activity) in the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education.

Principal Responsibilities:

  • Provide online and in person reference services, including research consultations
  • Participate in the design, implementation, and assessment of information literacy instruction with a focus on health sciences students
  • Collaborate with library and teaching faculty to incorporate information literacy development into the curriculum
  • Excellent teaching skills with the use of technology in the classroom, one-on-one or in small groups
  • Participate in collection development and related holdings management tasks
  • Serve as liaison to academic departments in the School of Health Professions, the School of Nursing, and the College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences
  • Demonstrate a solid and continuous record of scholarship
  • Provide service to departmental, campus and university committees
  • Additional duties as assigned

Qualifications Required

  • Master’s degree in library science from an ALA-accredited institution or an ALA-recognized equivalent
  • Second subject master’s degree or at least 30 additional graduate credits
  • Two years of reference and teaching experience in an academic or medical library
  • Familiarity with library resources in various disciplines, including health sciences and sciences
  • Scholarly publications and activities
  • Familiarity with emerging trends in the profession and in higher education
  • Excellent written, oral and interpersonal communication skills
  • Experience serving a highly diverse user community
  • Excellent professional qualities such as team spirit, adaptability, flexibility, problem-solving, multitasking, and project management Preferred
  • A second master’s degree, preferably in health sciences, science, or a related subject, is highly desirable
  • Experience working in a diverse and fast-paced academic environment
  • Experience providing research support or training via classroom instruction, workshops, consultations, or other modalities
  • Experienced professional that is resourceful and adaptive
  • Experience as a library liaison to academic and/or other campus departments
  • Academic publication or other demonstrated scholarship
  • Knowledge of trends and developments in academic libraries, including the ACRL Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education As the intellectual center of each campus, the LIU Libraries prepare LIU students for academic success, lifelong learning, and being responsible global citizens.
