DESCRIPTION
This position is a full-time tenure track, 10-month classroom teaching assignment in the Ethnic Studies, Social and Behavioral Science Division. The current teaching load is 15 lecture hour equivalents per semester. Faculty are also responsible for 5 office hours per week and are expected to devote as much time as necessary to perform the professional responsibilities of the position. Participation in professional activities, curriculum development and campus committees is expected. The teaching assignment may include courses offered in either onsite, online and/or hybrid format, evening and or Saturday classes.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES
- Teach fifteen lecture hour equivalents per semester in Ethnic Studies, Social and Behavioral Science using various teaching methods including demonstrations and active learning strategies.
- Maintain five office hours per week, including regular posted office hours, which are accessible to students.
- Responsible for preparation time
- Participate in faculty/division meetings; yearly program review; curricular planning, development, and implementation; student learning outcomes: data collection and writing action plans, program learning outcomes, development, assessment, and implementation; evaluation of educational programs; and college governance to advance the college’s mission and strategic goals.
- Participate in faculty professional development and continuing education activities that are designed to maintain and develop currency in the field, pedagogy (for traditional and online teaching and learning), and student support strategies, especially as they relate to student equity initiatives.
- Maintain records of attendance, census, grades, etc.
- Provide an environment conducive to effective learning.
- Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
- Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with all employees and others encountered in the course of work.
- Demonstrate a sensitivity to, and understanding of, the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.
- Travel between District locations is also expected.
- Performs other instructional-related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
(Applicant must meet one of the following requirements)
- Master’s in African American Studies, Black Studies, Africana Studies, Latino Studies, La Raza Studies, Chicana/o Studies, Asian American Studies, Native American Studies, or American Indian Studies OR Master’s in Ethnic Studies OR the equivalent.
- AVC Academic Senate’s approved equivalency: Approved Equivalency May 2, 2024
Bachelor’s degree in any academic discipline AND 12 semester units completed in graduated level course work in Ethnic Studies or related field AND Master’s degree in at least one other interdisciplinary area including American Studies, Women’s Studies, Filipinx Studies, Cultural Studies, Political Science, Sociology, English, History Education, Psychology, or Art
AND a sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students (tit. 5 § 53024.1).
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
- Professional and pedagogical expertise in Ethnic Studies with a specialization in African American Studies, Chicana/o Studies, Native American/American Indian and Indigenous Studies, or Asian American Studies.
- Demonstrated experience with culturally responsive teaching practices and equity-centered classroom policies that support students from historically underserved populations in higher education, with a focus on reducing equity gaps and fostering success for underrepresented students.
- Experience and/or willingness to teach incarcerated students at a prison location.
- Experience and/or willingness to teach dual-enrollment courses at a high school location.
- Experience developing and revising curriculum, assessing student learning outcomes, and contributing to program review documents.
- Proficiency in using a learning management system (LMS), specifically Instructure’s Canvas, to enhance student learning, engagement, retention, and successful outcomes.
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a team environment, including active participation in program development, curriculum design, and shared governance, with examples of successful collaboration on projects or initiatives that enhance student success and equity.
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively in team environments, including participation in program development, curriculum design, shared governance, student organizations, and initiatives supporting student success and equity.
- Experience in community engagement and professional development.
