JOB SUMMARY: The Department of Professional Security Studies (PSS) at New Jersey City University invites applications for a full-time tenure-track faculty appointment at the assistant or associate professor level commencing with the September 1, 2025. The professional Security Studies department offers degrees at the Bachelor, Master, and Doctoral levels. This position is ideally suited for a new or established professor with a research agenda and practical interest in cyber security, national security, civil security, emergency operations, computer forensics, and/or ethical hacking.

NJCU is expanding its cyber security and electronic forensics laboratory and developing courses that will lead to Computer Forensics and Ethical Hacking certifications. The successful candidate will be expected to identify tools, technologies, and visualization systems that will allow the cyber security and electronic forensics laboratory to be configured as an emergency operations center that will function during tabletop, communication, and full-scale exercises in partnership with public sector entities as well as during student research projects. These efforts are consistent with the current National Initiative for Cyber Security Education (NICE) and Knowledge Unit (KU) initiatives of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the National Security Agency (NSA) that have designated the Professional Security Studies Department as one of our nation’s Centers of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense Education (CAE).

Candidates with classroom experience and/or a strong background in public/military law enforcement, private security, border/transportation security, crisis and disaster management, information security, crisis response, risk management, policy development, and/or related legal issues are preferred. Applicants must possess a terminal degree in discipline pertaining to or directly supporting the field of Information Assurance/Cyber Security. Active ABDs preparing for dissertation defense will be considered. A terminal degree must be conferred within one year of hire.

Teaching responsibilities in the Professional Security Studies Department will be distributed within the three levels of our programs – Doctorate in Civil Security (DSc), Graduate (MS), and Undergraduate (BS) in Cyber Security and National Security Studies – primarily at the Jersey City campus, but as needed at Middlesex campus.

Professional Security Studies Department is an interdisciplinary department drawing upon faculty with a research focus in areas that contribute to developing knowledge in cyber security, emergency management, infrastructure protection, security studies and information assurance. The successful applicant will be expected to advise Doctor of Science (DS) students/candidates in dissertation committees as a mentor and/or committee member. The position will include advising undergraduate students at NJCU’s Jersey City campus, possible Graduate Coordinator duties at the Jersey City campus, and possible Department Chairperson duties at the Jersey City campus.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Teach at the BS, MS, and DSc levels
  • ??Provide academic and professional leadership for the department within the Information Assurance/Cyber Security domain (including maintaining and submitting for recertification at all academic levels)
  • Involvement in an active scholarship program, including the establishment and maintenance of a new emergency operations center with computer forensics, ethical hacking, and cyber security laboratories
  • Position has a research focus and teaching responsibilities.
  • Maintain currency in the literature, methodologies, and techniques in the Information Assurance/Cyber Security field.
  • Promote the highest standards of scholarship.
  • Encourage an environment of learning and achievement among colleagues and DSc candidates.
  • Advise and mentor undergraduate and graduate students at NJU’s Jersey City campus and possibly Middlesex campus.
  • ??Implement and participate in Cyber Security/Information Security activities and tournaments for undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Serve on doctoral committees as mentor/chair or committee member.
  • ??Perform other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION: Earned terminal degree in a discipline pertaining to or directly relating to the field of Information Assurance/Cyber Security; Active ABDs preparing for dissertation defense considered; however, the terminal degree must be conferred within one year of hire.

EXPERIENCE: Minimum of four years of Information Assurance/Cyber Security related professional experience

  • ??Graduate teaching experience at an accredited institution is preferable.
  • Demonstrate scholarly achievement in information assurance/cyber security as evidenced by consultancies, published works in referred journals, presentations at professional meetings, receipt of research grants, serving as an officer in a professional society, etc.
  • Appropriate professional/board certifications) is a plus (i.e. CPP, CISSP, CISA, CISM, CFS, CEH, etc.); If a candidate does not hold any certification, one must be earned prior to the fifth year of service at the University.
