Organizational Unit Overview:
The School of Dental Medicine is composed of ten administrative offices and four academic departments. The Administrative units include the Offices of the Dean, Vice Dean, Associate Dean for Student Affairs, Associate Dean for Research, Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs, Associate Dean for Extramural Clinical Practices, Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs, Assistant Dean for Dental Education and Informatics, Assistant Dean for Academic Success and the Assistant Dean for Business Operations and Financial Affairs. The four academic departments are Surgical Sciences, Pediatric Dentistry, Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics, General Dentistry and Foundational Sciences.
Included in the mission of the School of Dental Medicine is to educate dental care providers (both dental students and dental residents) and to address the oral health care needs of the underserved population of North Carolina. The School of Dental Medicine meets these missions by operating dental clinics that provide both educational experiences for the dental students and residents and provides dental care to the residents of North Carolina. These clinics occur in both Ross Hall in Greenville, North Carolina, as well as Community Service-Learning Centers located throughout North Carolina. To operate these clinics, appropriate dental auxiliaries and clinical staff are needed.
Job Duties:
The Chair of General Dentistry is a senior member of the School of Dentistry management team responsible for leading and managing the General Dentistry Division of the dental school. The division works in close cooperation with the Offices of Academics Affairs, Clinical Affairs, Dental Education and Informatics and Planning and Extramural Affairs to support the Schools programs and initiatives. In addition, the division works closely with other Schools and Colleges of East Carolina University and other components of the University of North Carolina, as well as local/regional educational and clinical programs.
The Chair of General Dentistry participates in hiring, mentoring and professional development of the faculty in the general dentistry division including those at the Schools Community Service Learning Centers, and in the general dentistry residency programs. The Chair also provides coordination of didactic and clinical activities among the clinical disciplines in general dentistry. The Chair coordinates the development and implementation of the general dentistry model in the School of Dentistry and Community Service Learning Centers.
Specific duties include:
Recruitment, hiring, and mentoring of the faculty in the General Dentistry Division.
Coaching junior and senior faculty as they conduct basic and/or clinical research, and other scholarly activities that will help them qualify for appropriate promotion. This includes providing sufficient time, close monitoring and regular encouragement for these activities.
Working closely with the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs in curriculum development and implementation.
Working closely with the Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs in the development and implementation of the clinical and academic components of the electronic dental record.
Working closely with the Assistant Dean for Dental Education and Informatics and other informatics personnel to optimize the use of technology to support the general dentistry teaching programs.
Coordination of didactic and clinical activities with the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and the Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs.
Coordination of all academic programs among the clinical disciplines within the general dentistry division both in the school and at the community services learning centers.
Coordination of accreditation and other program documentation as needed.
Represent the general dentistry division at meetings of the School of Dentistry Executive Committee, at appropriate campus and hospital meetings, and other meetings as needed.
Responding to local and national requests for information and documentation related to the divisions didactic and clinical programs.
Working closely with the directors of the advanced general dentistry programs to ensure high quality comprehensive general dentistry experiences for all residents.
Participating in budget planning for the general dentistry division and ensuring that staffing, equipment, and funding are appropriate for the mission requirements.
Assisting the Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs in quality assurance and improvement and compliance efforts.
Working with division faculty and others, develop and deliver state-of-the-art continuing education programs in the areas of general dentistry and academic program development on a regional, statewide and, if possible, nationwide basis.
Responding to assignments from the various Associate/Assistant Deans and the Dean of the School of Dentistry essential to division and school operations.
Attending meetings and representing the School in internal and external venues as requested by the Dean.
Representing the School to external constituencies as appropriate.
Performing other duties and assuming additional responsibilities as assigned by the Dean.

Minimum Education/Experience:
DDS or DMD (or equivalent) from an ADA– accredited institution.
Broad knowledge of issues in dental education.
At least five years of full-time general dental clinical experience in dental education at the institutional level, working in development, implementation, evaluation and monitoring of departmental programs leading to the dental degree.
Demonstrated ability to apply academic experiences of contemporary dental education and traditional educational values to the Community Services Learning Center model.
Demonstrated record of increasing leadership responsibilities, preferably as a program director, division head, or chair.
Experience in building teams to identify and resolve problems.
Qualifications to be appointed at the associate professor or professor level.
Eligibility for dental licensure in North Carolina (a NC dental license must be secured prior to the first day of employment).
License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation:

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education:
Completion of a AEGD or GPR residency.
Fellowship or Mastership in the Academy of General Dentistry.
Demonstrated experience in evidence-based teaching and practice.
Experience in the business aspects of general practice- patient relations, staffing, and financial management, community outreach activities and digital record keeping, imaging, and evaluation.
